REDWOOD TREES
Two California redwood trees (Scluoias)
have been presented to the
Jniversity recently and planted on
jibhcs Green. The trees were preented
by Professor W. H. Wicker
nd were grown from seed on his
ilantation in Newberry county. They
re two years old and four feet high.
Phis type of tree attains immense size
nd lives to be a thousand years old
11 California.
Some have expressed the opinion
bat they would not grow in this
limate, but since Professor Wicker
vas able to grow them from seed
?lanted in South Carolina, it is beieved
by Prof. E. C. Coker, of the
grounds committee, that they will
ontinuc to thrive here.

So here we arc on the Bremen.
Ain't that nice? Sure it ain't. Nothing
much has happened this week.
Not a single typhoon, waterspout, or
hurricane?not even a cloudburst.
Nevertheless, as the brilliant poet of
the vacation. period remarked, wish
you were here.
I am in full charge of the ship, the
captain being indisposed. And this
isn't for publication, but I'll tell you
why. He is in bed with a fractured
skull, seven crushed ribs, a dislocated
hip, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, curvature
of the spine, and a cold in the
head. As soon as I heard of it I
knew there must be something wrong
somewhere, and sure enough, I was
right. His wife did it when she caught
him leaning over the rail making eyes
at a mermaid.
The ship's doctor is now in the process
of abandoning all hope for the
captain's recovery. 1 can tell that by
the cheerful look on his face, because
it is no secret that he and the captain
didn't get along like a pair of lovesick
turtle doves. But during my
short stay on the ship, the captain and
1 have gotten quite intimate and
friendly?even to the extent of calling
each other by our first names. So his
death will be a sad blow to me, and
even sadder one to my pocketbook,
for none of the rest of the crew seem
to think 1 deserve the high salary I
get. But they just don't know genius
when they sec it. The passengers do,
however. Knowing that I used to be
the champion heavyweight poet of the
world, they have asked me to do an
epitaph for the occasion. Copies will
be printed and served along with the
tea and cookies at the funeral. Here
it is:
Jimmy was a wily blade
(Before his health began to fade.)
He flirted with a wild mermaid,
Yo-ho-ho and bier und pretzels.
The mermaid was a dizzy girl
With teeth of jade and eyes of pearl.
She set poor Jimmy's head awhirl,
Yo-ho-ho and bier und pretzels.
Now this is all there is to tell:
The mermaid winked and Jimmy
fell,
And when lie died he went to Heaven,
Yo-ho-ho and bier und pretzels.

BLEACHERS ON
MELTON FIELD GO
OLD STANDS DEMOLISHED
The old, unsightly bleachers which
marred the beauty of Melton field
have at last been demolished. The
work was accomplished last week under
the supervision of assistant marshal.
They will not be replaced.
These stands had rotted so badly
that it was deemed unsafe for spectators
to use them any more. The few
remaining good pieces of lumber have
been placed around the wire fence
surrounding Melton field to keep baseballs
from rolling under it.
