PRE-MEDICAL FRAT
Fraternity Bids Girls For The
First Time
For the first time since its advent on
the campus Alpha Epsilon Delta, professional
pre-medical fraternity,
pledged girls to membership at a
meeting last Thursday night. A
number of boys were also pledged.
The following were pledged: Eileen
Neil, Odetta Mauney, Charlotte
Porter, Ruth Eiroff, A. H. Johnson,
Jack O'Neil, Heyward Clarkson, G. H.
Tucker, and D. S. Pope.
The local chapter recently received
a letter from the national headquarters
giving them the right to pledge girls.
This has been done in other chapters.
At the meeting Thursday night Ed
Caldwell was elected vice-president to
fill out the term left vacant by W. D.
Whiteside, who did not return in
February. A. F. Rizzolo was elected
treasurer. James Norwood is president
of the fraternity and Lanis Ilite
is secretary.

SOPHOMORE ASKS
SEAT, CAUSED
Chapel seats have been sold gullible
freshmen in the past, but one
sophomore occupies a seat this semester
only after he applied for it in person.
His request was granted by the
registrar's office.
EeRoy Want, the sophomore, can
be seen sitting in seat number four
right, every Tuesday and Thursday.
He went to the registrar's office on
learning that his name was not listed
for a chapel seat, and asked that a
place be given him.
"I have had a chapel seat given-me
only one term out of the four I have
been at the University," Want declared.
He explained that he requested
seats during the other three
terms because he wished to keep in

Garden Of Native South Carolina
Shrubs Will Be Planted In
Vacant Lot
Efforts arc being made to plant a
garden on the University campus in
which native South Carolina shrubs
will be used exclusively, according to
Prof. E. C. Coker, chairman of the
buildings and ground committee.
The object of this garden is to show
what can be done in ornamental planting
in home grounds, school yards,
church yards, and city parks by using
only those plants which arc found
growing wild in South Carolina woods.
This would carry out the plan long
considered by the late Prof. Andrew C.
Moore, for many years professor of
botany at the University.
The site considered for the location
of this garden of native shrubbery is
the vacant lot on the southwest corner
of Green atid Main streets.
This is in line with the program of
campus improvements now being
carried on. During the past week two
large boxwood plants, donated to the
University by Mr. Ben Crowder of
Fairfield county, and some lowcountry
live oaks and small magnolias,
given by Mr. W. L. Limehouse of
James Island, near Charleston, were
set out.

Nothing could have been more ideal,"
Want said. "Last term I happened to
get the seat I had had my first semester
in school. It was also close to the
ladies.
"But this term, after I've gone and
asked for a seat, they've moved me
all the distance across chapel from
the girlsl"
It is not unusual for students who
have not been assigned seats to make
application for them, says Miss
Miriam Holland, secretary to Mr.
Chase. Several such requests were
received and complied with last term.

DEBATING TEAMS
HAVE HARD LUCK
LOSE IN BIG TRIANGLE
Out-talked by their opponents, Carolina's
picked debaters lost two angles
out of three in the Big Triangle debate
with Florida and Tennessee Monday
night.
"Resolved, that all nations should
adopt a plan of complete disarmament
except as required for police purposes"
was the query upon which Florida
beat one University negative team,
and Tennessee the allirmative Carolina
men.
No news of the outcome of the
League-Want argument with North
Carolina State has been received by
the Gamecock. This team debates
Wake Forest tonight.
Wilson Weldon and Thomas C.
Hankins, who meet the University of
Florida's debaters at Knoxville, Tenn.,
lost the negative side of the disarmament
debate.
"We lost. Alibi, our energy expended
in keeping itemized expense
account," Weldon wired The Gamecock
office last night.
"Weiss and Ray, Tennessee team
debating negative, won," states a
telegram from La Bruce King, who
with F. W. Wood argued the affirmative
of the question at Gainesville,
Fla.

K. S. K. ASKS FOR FIRE
ESCAPES IN LE CONTE
At a recent meeting of the K. S. K.,
a committee was appointed to see and
remind the proper authorities of the
fact that Le Conte college, the scientific
building, has not the proper fire
escapes.
This is an important matter and deserves
due consideration. The K. S. K.
hopes that some action will be taken
in regard to it immediately, says Frank
Taylor, president.
