Freshman Learns
Old College Yell
Lowest Insult Possible For An;
Student Of Carolina
It happened in my first month a
a student at Carolina. I suppose i
must have been abou. 9:30 p. in.
was in my room in Woodrow Colleg<
studying or maybe I was reading th
Saturday Evening Post. At any rat
I was all innocence and wasn't ex
pecting what followed. There wer
a number of other boys in the roor
too. I have found out since the
that whenever you want to read o
study there will always be severs
boys dropping in to start a bull scs
sion.
On this particular night the bu
session was just getting organize
when some unknown person rode b
on Green street and with a hoars
but lusty voice yelled, "horse doctor.
Immediately the air turned purpl
with the type of language which i
commonly called "cussing," but thi
night it surpassed anything that
had ever heard before. Every boy i
that room except me had rushed t
the windows to denounce the one wh
had yelled. They seemed to want t
tell the world at large that anyon
who would ride by and yell hors
doctor was a?well, I won't tell ex
actly what they said, but it was quit
plain that they didn't think so mucl
of him.
Now I saw no reason to feel lik
that at all, of course, I am studyinj
to be a journalist and not a veterinar;
surgeon; but I didn't feel that I shoul
curse a man who seemed to be mis
taken about it. Naturally in my in
nocent ignorance I asked, "What*
the idea in that?"
The one of the boys who ha<
cursed the loudest and longest, am
who also happened to be an upper
classman turned to me and saic
"Freshman, would you let anybod;
call you a horse doctor?"
"Well," I began meekly, "I'd prob
ably explain to him that I was study
ing to?"
"Get this!" he interrupted, "you cai
let a man curse your ancestry, or in
sinuate that there is a blemish in you
family tree, if you want to; but don'
let anybody call you a horse doctor
Understand?"
"Yeah, I understand." I said, bu
still I wasn't quite satisfied about th<
matter.
For days after that I asked every
one I saw why I shouldn't allow my
self to be called a horse doctor. Mos
of them told me frankly that the]
didn't know why but that they weri
sure there was some good reason
One boy told me a rather vague ston
about a veterinary surgeon who grad
uated here many years ago. I aske<
how many years ago, and he didn'
know. I was still unsatisfied and t<
tell the truth, I am unsatisfied to this
day. I am certain of only one thing
and that is that it is an old GaroJin.
custom to refuse to be called a hors<
doctor.
So now when some unknown per
son rides by on Green street and yell;
with a hoarse and lusty voice, "hors<
doctor," I, too, rush to the window
and explain to him, in the language
of a sailor, that one who yells hors<
doctor is of the lowest type of hu
inanity and that his immediate fore
bears are of an uncertain nature.

MORSE IS WEEKLY ORATOB
Interesting Debate Is One 01
Features Of Good Program
The Euphradian Literary society, ai
its meeting held last Tuesday night
decided to enforce the constitution o]
the society in regards to the fines foi
unexcuscd absences and the dropping
of those men from the roll who have
over four successive unexcused absences.
This action was taken ir
order that those men who are taking
no interest in the work might b<
eliminated from the roll.
The debate for the evening was,
Resdlved: "that South Carolina should
grant divorces." The negative, defended
by Griffith T. Pugh and LeRoy
M. Want lost a close argument
to the affirmative, represented by
Yancey McLcod and J. J. Brown.
J. Mitchell Morse was the weekly
orator. He spoke very entcrtaingly
on the subject of "labor organization
in the South."

Frank: "What is that terrible
odor?"
John: "Business."
Frank: "How does business make
that odor?"
John: "It's rotten."
Lady: "Do you make life-size enlargements
from snapshots?"
Photographer: "That's our specialty,
Miss."
Lady: "Fine. Here's a picture I
took of the Washington Monument."

WEEK IS QUIET
AT INFIRMARY
ERY FEW CONFINED TO BED
"It has been very quiet at the inrmary
during the past week, and
icrefore there is not much news to
ivc out," says Mrs. Madden. Howver,
this is in itself good news. Durig
the past week only four boys have
een confined to their beds in the inrmary.
They were J. YV. Hayes,
obert Palmer, Pierce Gulledge, and
ack Moore; but none of these were
jriously ill.
Of course there has been the usual
uota of colds, sprained ankles, boils
tc., but this is to be expected every
eek.
Last year this time the infirmary
as filled to overflowing with an epiemic
of influenza. On the whole, coiiitions
this fall have been better with
illy a fraction as much sickncss as in
revious years.
