COLD WEATHER
GRIPS CAMPUS
MUCH DAMAGE DONE
Damage that will probably reach a
total of several hundred dollars has
been done to the campus during the
recent cold spell. Several of the
plants that have been placed in various
sections of the University property
were killed or injured by the severe
cold and rain. Several pipes froze
and bursted, among them being ones
in the Journalism building, the Gymnasium,
and Flinn hall. Repair work
is being done as .quickly as possible.
According to the weather bureau,
the weather of the past few weeks
has been the coldest that Columbia
has experienced in several years.

FRAT NEWS
Lcroy Want is to represent the
local chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi at the
fraternity's annual convention in Cincinnati
on the 29th, 30th, and 31st
of this month.
Sigma Nu has initiated "Crip"
Rhame, Jack Douglas, and Ben Woodruff.
The local chapter of Sigma Chi has
recently had as its guests L. R. Warrington,
former counsel of the Alpha
Beta chapter at University of California;
Edward Parnell of the Gamma
Theta chapter at University of Florida
and R. T. Reeves a pledge of the same
chapter, who was here with Florida
football team.
Hon. J. Gordon Hughes, distinguished
alumnus and trustee of the
University, visited the Pi Kappa Alphas
here a short time ago. Mr.
Hughes was a member of the old Xi
chapter, located here in 1894.
The Pi K. A.'s honored their
pledges with an informal party in the
club rooms last week. Members and
dates were present.
Amnion McClellan, an alumnus of
the Florida chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha,
visited the campus for a few days
last week.
Patrick Nelson, the local Pan-Hellenic's
representative to the National
Inter-Fraternity council's annual convention
in New York last Friday and
Saturday returned today. Mr. Nelson
left Columbia last Wednesday. He
could not be reached by a reporter
from the Gamecock, but a member
of the Pan-Hellenic stated that Pat
had been warmly received by the
council, which expressed its happiness
in having the University as a
member. This is the first time that
Carolina has been represented on the
council, which was formed after fraternities
were banned at the University
some years ago.
Last week's edition of the Gamecock
carried an article on how expenses
of the trip were to be defrayed.
At this time it was mentioned that
the faculty might aid in meeting them.
Today the Pan-Hellenic announced
that the faculty had contributed $30
of $110 needed. The remainder was
raised by assessing each fraternity $5.
Hon. J. Gordon Hughes, distinguished
alumnus of the University
visited the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity
a short time ago. Mr. Hughes was a
member of the old Xi chapter in
1894, and he is now a trustee of the
University.
Bill Crown, Pi K. A. pledge from
Mobile, Ala., is associated with the
photographic editor of the Garnet and
Black. Bill and his camera are always
on the scene.
The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity gave
an informal party last week in honor
of the pledges. Members and their
dates were present.

Florida chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha
was a visitor for a few days last week.

Thespian club will meet Thursday
at 7:00 o'clock in the room above the
chapel. All members must be present.
All freshmen and new students who
have not had their physical examination
are requested to come to the infirmary
immediately and receive it.
They cannot get credit for their school
work until they have undergone the
examination.
The officers and chairman of committees
of the Fresh Y council are to
meet at tea at the home of R. G. Bell
Wednesday night at 7 o'clock to discuss
the work of the various committees
and plan for the work of the
Freshman Y council for the rest of
the year. All officers and committee
chairmen are asked to meet promptly
at Minn Hall at 7 o'clock in order to
get transportation.
