CRAWFORD TAKES
COURSE IN VOICE
Director Of Physical Education
Studies Music Under
Matteson <
i
Feeling that his voice has not suf- '
ficient carrying power to reverberate *
through the gymnasium, Jack Craw- ^
ford, director of physical education,
has enrolled for a course in voice {
training with Maurice Matteson, CaroUna's
big song and dance man. Mr.
Crawford will be a pupil of Mrs. c
Mamie Crooks, assistant to Mr. Mat- *
teson. In keeping with good athletic j
traditions, Mr. Crawford will work
up a tonsil sweat several times a
week.
The University gym has been
afflicted always with poor acoustics, ^
but preparations will enable him to be
heard in all four corners, as well as ^
to sing a rollicking ditty in the best *
Mattesonian style. ^
HICKS SUFFERS '
INJURY IN GAME J
Hurt In First Play Of Virginia- ,
Carolina Football Game i
i
N. B. Hicks, hard driving full back J
of the Gamecocks, is now in the Uni- j
versity infirmary suffering with a j
broken collar bone.
He was injured on the first play j
of the Carolina-Virginia game and
had to be carried off of the field. At
first his injury was not thought to be
serious but upon later examination,
his collar bone was shown to be
broken.
His shoulder has been placed in a
cast and it is expected that he will be j
released from the infirmary in a few ,
days. However, his injury probably |
will keep him from participating in
any more football games this fall.
PRITCHARD FINDS
SOCIETY SEAL
Euphradian Relieved To Find The
Long Lost Seal In
Law Office
l
The Euphradian Literary Society t
has been missing its seal for the past j
two or three years. This seal had 1
become a vital part of the society as I
it had been used to stamp society ?
diplomas for a long period of years. <
This seal dates back to the beginning
of the society. I
The seal was located the other day <
in the Law School by Edward K.
Pritchard, a member of the Euphradian
Society. Mr. Pritchard found it :
in a desk in Dean Nelson Frierson's
v department.
It is, indeed, with great relief that <
the society learns of this discovery,
as the seal is an antiquated relic of i
the earlier days of the society.

FRAT NEWS
"
Rush season has ended at last. The ?
rampus begins to realize that deans, i
egistrars, and instructors play a part '
n its activities. The hard rusher may 1
igain look in at his classes. Pledges ?
vill be urged by their newly found i
[or made) brothers to pass enough .
vork to be able to contribute to the
reasury when initiation time comes
iround.
Now that the quiet period has descended,
those men with colds, girls,
md other things, which may have
ieen interferred with by the season
lust ended, have a chance to again
;ive them the consideration merited.
The installations of the Delta Club
(to Sigma Chi) and the Hercules i
31ub (to Sigma Phi Epsilon), coning
as they do, at practically the same
time, will afford many worshipers of
Terpsichore and Epicurus a week replete
with their favorite diversions.
Both plan the usual installation ball, i
md both will probably (feed?) members
of the Pan-Hellenic council at
;heir banquets.
Much frat material will be left over
ifter the prospective pledges are .
mlled from the chapel Monday after10011.
This supply is made up of
hose men who cither did not get the
>id they wanted, or who were overooked
in the mad scramble for the
setter known eligibles. That a man
loesn't go anything on bid day may
>e the result of determination to go
only with a certain group, or lack of
opportunity to meet any of the fragility
men. Many arc holdouts over
several chapters for the particular invitation
desired. In some cases, the
nan is convinced of the suitability
af another group and goes with them,
)ut, in far too many, the frosh takes
what he can get and hopes for the
)est; or even worse, takes a second J
:>r third choice. When this occurs,
lope alone remains.
Furman has not as yet definitely
decided upon a date for bid day. The
;onsensus of campus opinion favors
i material shortening of the rush season.
Last year the bid day was not
until the early part of December.
Kappa Alpha, for the past two years '
one national among eight locals on L
he Furman campus, has recently been
ioined by Delta Sigma Phi and Pi ;
Kappa Phi when these two nationals i
granted charters to petitioning groups
it the University. Delta Sig has one
Dther chapter in the state that at
Wofford. Pi Kappa Phi reinstated
their Delta chapter which was taken
3Ut when frats were banned in 1916.
