ERSKINE DEFEATS
U. S. C. IN SLOW
GAME SATURDAY
CHA+NDLER BRIGHT STAR
Bob Stoddard Hit Hard Through
out Game; Gamecocks Score
By Julian Krawcheck
A belated ninth rally failed to pro
duce enough runs to overcome a com
manding lead that Erskine had piled
up on eleven hits and seven Carolina
errors, and the collegians from Due
West romped to an easy win over
the Roosters here Saturday, six to
three.
The two high lights of an otherwise
listless and one sided game were
Richards' spectacular diving catch of
Berkeley's drive in the eighth inning,
robbing Erskine of three certain runs,
and Chandler's circuit drive for the
Gamecocks in the same frame, with
none on base.
Gettys, Erskine moundsman, hurled
a masterful game for the Seceders,
keeping eight Carolina hits well
scattered, while R. Stoddard, Carolina
pitcher, was hit hard throughout.
Carolina drew first blood in the
second inning on Stoddard's infield
hit, a stolen base, free pass to first,
and a double steal that brought Stod
dard home. However, Erskine came
back strong in the next frame, taking
the lead with three runs tallied from
three successive hits and a wild heave
to second by Stoddard, Gamecock
hurler.
Erskine tallied one run in each the
fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, bring
ing up their total to six while Chand
ler's teriffic drive into right field in
the eigthth frame and Windus' run
in the ninth brought the Rooster's
total up to three.
Hambright, Parkinson, Barkley and
Gettys with two hits each, led the
Seceder attack while Chandler, with
a double and homer, and Windus with
a double and two singles, were Caro
lina's two big guns.

CAROLINA-PENITEN
TIARY GAME
Their heavy bats subdued for six
innings the Carolina Freshmen base
ball team cut loose in the latter stages
of the game to completely annihiliate
the Caged Tigers Saturday afternoon
14-5.
Pitchers on both teams proved
fairly ineffective. The Biddies won
by virtue of superior hitting power,
19 hits being gathered off the peni
tentiary hurler.
An array of material was injected
into the game by coach Stoney in
an attempt to get the low-down on

Fowl Tips
BAREFOOT DAY was a howling.
success, or should we say a howl
ing display of pain, when some
firm planted hoof connected with
a soft, downy pebble?
SOAP SALES in Columbia jumped
50% after barefoot day and water
meters rose in proportion.
JUST A LITTLE OFF-TRACK in
the two above tips but if going
"barefooted" isn't sport, what is?
'Tis for the upper classmen any
way.
THE CAMPUS is now humming
with activity as the tracksters hit
on all six lungs in bursts of speed,
the baseball team continues to
win and lose games, and the
racketeers enter their last week
of tryouts.
THE TENNIS MEET with Wof
ford, scheduled for last Thursday,
was called off when Jupiter Plu
vius handed out rain checks and
demanded that all concerned wait
for fair weather.
NEXT TIME the Gamecocks get
on a batting spree like that of
last Tuesday, send for a major
league scout to sign up the whole
bunch.
AN EX-GAMECOCK, Billy LaMar,
ace-high second sacker, has gone
to Salisbury with all the earmarks
of being a permanent fixture on
the keystone sack.
THE TENNIS TEAM goes on an
up-state trip on April 25. Clem
son, Furman and Wofford being
in the itinerary.
EITHER THE PENITENTIARY
TEAM is exceedingly weak or the
Biddies have a budding Yankee
Juggernaut. The Chicks sent the
penhurler's offerings to all cor
ners of the lot in the game Satur
day.
BUDDY LAVAL looks like the
proverbial chip off the old block
in resemblance to the hard hitting
Billy of former years.
CAROLINA'S ENTRIES in the
Tech relays didn't ride 275 miles
for naught. They succeeded in
hauling down a second and third
place.
THE GAMECOCKS BOBBLED
themselves out of a good baseball
game Saturday afternoon. There
are times when the best of teams
hit a slump and sink to the depths.
Carolina experienced such a situa
tion when the infield made six
costly errors coupled with poor
base-running by the whole team
and handed the game to Erskine
with their best regards.
First Burgar: "Come on! Let's
figure up and see how much we made
on this haul."
His Pal: "Shucksl I'm tired. Let's
wait and look in the morning paper."
He: "Do you really think there is
danger in kissing?"
She: "Wait 'till I go listen and see
if papa is asleep or not."
The part of the auto that causes
more accidents than any other is the
nut that holds the steering wheel.
The star of the game was Laval,
son of the famous Billy, who ac
cepted 10 chances on third base with
only one bobble. Out of five times
at the bat he got a home run and a
double.
Harley socked the ball for four clean
bingles to top the hites.

TENNIS NOTICE
The tennis court below the scientific
building has been reserved for the
faculty. Several times lately members
of the faculty, wishing to play tennis,
have found this court occupied by
students. These trespasses have been
a source of embarrassment as the
professors did not wish to rudely break
up the games going on by requesting
the students to leave the court, but
still wished to play. The attention of
the students is therefore courteously
directed to this rule in the hope that
they will discontinue playing on this
court as soon as faculty members ap
pear attired for tennis.
Biggs: "How does your Mother-in
law stand the heat?"
Jiggs: "I don't know; she's only
been dead two days."
"Daddy, why is that man running
up and down the smoking car with
his mouth open?"
"My son, that is a Scotchman get
ting a free smoke."
