CAROLINA WINS
FISTIC COMBAT
EROM CLEMSON
WIN THIRD STATE MEET
Gamecocks No Play Hands
Tigers. Scratched and Pecked
Badly in Scrap
Carolina annexed her third state win
when the Gamecock maulers won a close
meet from the Clemson mitmen by the
count of 4 to 3.
In the bantamweight bout McCauley
of Clemson, won a decision over Craven
of Carolina. The first round ended in
a draw, with McCauley taking the last
two.
Lumiansky of Carolina won a decision
over Hallman of Clemson, in the feath
erweight class. The Gamecock boxer
clearly showed his superiority by win
ning all three rounds.
Wilson of Carolina, after losing the
first rotund came back to win the second
and third rounds from Vincent of Clem
son and gained the decision in the light
weight class.
Mulherin of Clemson won the de
cision in the welterweight bout over
Ramsden, Carolina. The Judges declared
a draw at the end of the third round.
Mulherin carried the fourth.
Torchia, Clemson, won a decision ove
Leardo of Carolina.
In a battle royal, with both fighte:s
swinging knock-out punches, Keels of
Carolina won all three rounds from
Cannon of Clemson in the light heavy
weight scrap.
Before the heavyweight bout the
count stood at three all. This bout was
to be the supreme test for Wolfe of
Carolina and CoIn of Clemson, for the
meet depended on the winner. Wolfe
won a decision in the fourth round after
a draw was declared at the end of the
third.

The Y put on a little more ste~ami as

at the half 14-10.
Sox and C. Metts with 10 and 14
poinits resp)ectively, were the big guns
of the Y attack.
Powell andl Swartz played a neat
game for the Biddies. Floyd and

Fowl Tips
AT PRACTICALLY every game this
season such cries as "Fresh meat"
and other such unbecoming epithets
are thrown by a few "side liners"
very few, but these make enough
fuss to be clearly audible-at the
opposiu team. Cheer and yell until
you.r lungs burst, if you will, but
lay off the unsportsmanlike practice
of riding the opposing team.
* * * *
WHILE ON 'IHE subject of joy-kill
ers, perhaps it wouldn't be amiss to
say a word about the players. When
a member of the Carolina team
misses a crip shot, groans are im
mediately heard of "take him out,"
etc. These men are working hard
for Carolina and get nothing but
boos when they falter (from just a
few.) If the kicker can do better
and knows how it is done, then he
will be welcomed as a new addition
to the squad. If you can do any
better get out there and do it. I f
not-Keep quiet.
TAKE THE TWO above "tips" for
what they are worth. If they do
not apply to you, well-don't rock
the boat.
* * * *
CI'IlADEL FLASHED one of the
prettiest teams seen in action on the
local court this year. The bulldogs
had two bucket tossers, in Johnson
and Tiedeman, who were artists in
all departments of play.
* * * * * * *
ONE OF these (lays Clemson is going to
pull the unheard of phenomenon of
a 0-0 basketball game. Won't it be
even more mirth provoking if the
opponent should break the ice of
their freezes and give 'em a good
ducking on the short end of a 2-0
score? The Tigers would then con
demn the "wait and see what hap
pens" method of playforever.
* * * *
LOOKS LIKE the Gamecock puglilsts
have a clean cut claim to the State
boxing championship. P. C.., Cita
del and Clemson have fallen before
the Bird leather wielders, in 1-2-3
order.
* * * *
AT THE SOUTHERN conference
meet, not far distant, the Bird box
ers should go good. Wolfe, Keels
andl Lum.iansky should make strong
all-conference bids in their respec
tive classes.

PROSPECTS FOR
FRESHMAN BALL
The prospects for the 1929 Fresh
man baseball team are rosy. Sever:il
fast players from the high school and
prep teams will go to make. up the~
team. DeVaughn, former Riverside
twirler, and Brigham are among the
pitchers. Schwartz, a catcher, an<l
Floyd, Parker high star, are also prom
ising candidates.
Jimmy Ritch, of the famous Clover
baskettball and baseball ,teamnsl wil,
be counted on to hold dlown first base.
Henry Parker, Granitevilte boy, who
has had experience in the Georgia
Carolina amateur league, will patrol
one of the outer gardens for the new
boys.
There are several other classy play
ers who expect to try out, and great
thinigs are expected of this year's
Freshman eam.

An infuriated Bull-Dog growled
louder than the Gamecocks crew Wed

Carolina team had fought them to a
standstill for the greater part of the
contest.
Both teams, knowing that a defeat
for either would virtually put them
out of the State race and a win for
the other would just about clinch the
championship, put up a stiff and inter

Tiedeman, speedy forward of the
Citadel team, put his team ahead with
4 field goals at the beginning of th'_
contest before Carolina could break
into the scoring column. The Birds
called time out and began to slice
down the Citadel score when play was
resumed. The Bull-dogs led through
out the first half with a margin of 4
points, which the Birds could never
cut down.
Citadel drew ahead in the second
half to gain a lead of 13 points. At

SPRING FOOTBALL
PRACTICE ADVANCES
Approximately fifty men, compris
ing the cream of Carolina's football
talent, are working out daily on Mei
ton Field under the able tutelage of
Coach Billy Laval and assistants,
among whom are Whitey Rawl and
Kenneth Thrash, recent additions to
the coaching staff.
For the past several weeks the
players have been dalled in the fun
damentals of football-blocking, tack
ling, kicking, etc., but they will soon
he given a chance to apply these fun
damentals in real practice games will
begin in about two weeks time. Ob
servers expect to be shown an ink
ling of what Carolina's strength will
be next year, by these spring scrim
mages.
Among those out for spring prac
tice from last year's squad are Cap
tain-elect Julian Beall, Monk Shand,
Barney Smith, Gresset, Bru Boineau,
Edens and Hugh Stoddard. In ad
dition to these dearth of material is
out from last year's powerful fresh
men squad. including Powell, Cohen,
Smith, Culp, Hicks and others who
are expected to add much strength to
the 1929 varsity.
