CAROLINA DROPS
HEARTBRAKER TO
DUKE MEN 44-39
GAMECOCK AHEAD AT HALF
Blue Devils Win Thrl?:ing Game
After Trailing Most
of Time
Duke's Blue Devils, trailing the
Gamecocks for the greater part of the
contest cut loose in the latter stages
of the game with a flurry of goals to
win 44 to 39, in a heart-breaking game
for Carolina supporters.
Carolina played a bang-up game
until the closing minutes of play when
the defense cracked to let Duke take
the lead.
The Nicotines took an early lead of
8-5. L,ou White got on a rampage and
dropped in three goals in rapid succes
sion to put the Birds ahead. At the
half the Gamecocks led 26-19, with a
sure victory in sight.
Rembert dropped in two cleverly
executed shots at the beginning of
the second half, with Lou White get
ting a goal to throw the Birds far into
the lead. At this point Harry \Volfe
was put out on personal fowls, which
demoralized the team work of the
Gamecocks. Duke, sensing victory, be
gan to wake up and the devils com
menced to play-with the Gamecock
hopes.
Six minutes before the game ended
both teams were tied up. For the
next five minutes only 1 or 2 points
separated them. One minute before
ttie Captain Candler put the game on
ice with a snowbird, which ended the
scoring.

THE FRESHMAN-OLYMPIA farce

HARRY VOLFE seems to succeed 1n
any branch of sport he enters.
For four years Harry has played
a whale of a game at tackle, being
placed on the all-state football
team this past season. When Coach
Norman sent out the cry for more
basketball material, Harry respond
ed and was rewarded with a guard
position. In the heavyweight bo.
ing class none have ever beaten
him. More power to Harry.

Carolina's Biddies took Olympia
liigh into canap Wednesday night to
the tune of 24 to 19. :The victory was
not without a fight, however, Coach
Porter's p)roteges fought hard from
start to finish and the Chicks had to
'xert themselves to win.
Both teams played on even terms
for several minutes without scoring.
Then Jennings dropped in a foul to
score first for Olympia. A minute later
Powell shot a field goal to put the
Riddlies in the lead and they were
never headled after that, although the
score was close at times. At the half
the score was 10-4.
Pursley, half pint forward for Olym
pia was put in the game at this stage
and rang two baskets in rapid succes
sion. This little fellow had a sharp eye
for the basket. Had he been in the
game before this the score may have~
favored Olympia.
Powell was high scorer for the game
with 10 points. For Olympia, JennIngs

BULL PUPPIES

What promised to be a good, close
game ended in a complete rout for the
Biddies when they ran roughshod over
the Bulldog Rats to win by the top
heavy score of 54 to 28.
-oach Simmons started the second
Citadel team and saved his first string
for a hard game, or those were his
intentions. With the score 20 to 2 he
dragged them out and rushed the first
team in to check the Biddies. If any
thing this team was worse than the
previous five . The Biddies continued
their slaughtering methods and amass
ed a total of 36 points to Citadel's 6,
at the half.
The second half was a repetition of
the first. Coach Norman injected his
second team at this point and they too
carried the good work on. When they
got tired playing with the Puppies the
third team was sent in. They now
fought on practically even terms, until
the end o'" the game.
No individual star can be named for
honors, for all of them did well.
Floyd, forward for the Biddies showed
the way with 18 points. Powell, center
got 12 points.
Willard. Weeks and Barbot were
best for Citadel.
The Chicks showed a complete rever
sal of form from that shown in the
two high school games and once more
got into old time form.

WEEK'S BASKET
BALL SCHEDULE
The Citadel Bulldogs, undefeated in
the state race come to the field house
Wednesday night for a return engage
ment with the Gamecocks. Earlier in
the season the Cadets defeated the
Birds in Charleston, in the only state
game that the Birds have lost. A win
in this game would place us just about
on the top, so rest assured that the
Gamecocks will be oqt there fighting.
Friday night the Birds invade th<
Jungles of Clemson, to make it two it
succession over .the Tigers. As the old
rivalry hasn't cooled much, this game
should be a battle royal.
From Clemson they move over to
entertain the Purple Jersied hosts of
Furman. This will be the first time
that these two teams have met in
basketball this year. Both Furman and
the Birds are near the top and both
will be struggling to get still farther
up.
Saturday night the pugilist's of Caro
lina go to Clemson with hopes of nak
-ing it their third straight win in the
state. Both teams have lost a match
and seem to be about evenly matched.
