Zeta Phi Entertains For New Pledges Ex-Governor and Mrs. Harvey Attend Banquet Friday Night as Guest Marking the end of a week of exten sive entertaining for the new pledges. Zeta Phi club entertained Friday night with a banquet for them. The tables were arranged in a triangle. at the first of which sat the guests of honor. ..n the center of the triangle was a small table on which sat a huge basket of blue and white flowers, the club colors. 'IThe menu was printed on attractive. hand-painted cards, and at the place of each guest was a favor and a rosebud. The address of welcome was given b. Miss Martha Milhous, president of thr club, and the toast to the new girls, given by Mayre Wall was responded to by Miss Geraldine Cate. Other speak ers of the evening were former Governor and Mrs. Wilson G. Harvey, patron and patroness of the club, Prof. Charles F. Mercer, Dean Irene Dillard, and Mrs. D. E. Hansen, faculty advisor. The key note of all the speakers was the stress ing, not only of the social life in a fra ternity, but also the utilitarian and scholastic motive. The banqvet is the final event in the initiation of the new girls who are: Misses Geraldine Cate, Columbia; Roberta Plowden, Sumter, Rose Miller Betts, Columbia; Charlotte Porter, Lan caster; and Estille Whitaker, New berry. Club members present were: Misses Martha Milhous, president; Stella Blake, vice president, Gwendolyn Green, secre tary; Elizabeth Tompkins, treasurer, Mayre Wall, corresponding secretary; Gertrude Rigby, Louise McIntosh, Jetty Cloyd, and Marion DeWitt. Patrons, patronesses and faculty mem bers present were: Ex-Governor ihid Mrs. Wilson G. Harvey, Prof. and Mrs. Charles F. Mercer, Dean Irene Dillard. and Mrs. D. E. Hansen. -Sc Town Theatre Gets New Stage Manager WILLIAM DEAN DIRECTOR Harry Davis and Ora Mae Jack son Accept Position With Mississippi Institution There have been several changes in the personnel of the Town Theatre staff for the coming year. Harry Davis, stage manager under William Dean and Danny Reed, resi-gned during the summer to accept a position with the Mississippi Teachers College, leaving a vacancy N' the Theatre staff. Ora Mae Jackson, stage. assistant with Mr. Davis, also re signed to teach with him. Numeror~s applications wvere filed with Mr. Dean for the position last spring but appoint ment was not made unt-il about two weeks ago. Bannie L. Stewart, a student in the Arts and Science School, was appointed manager. Mr. Stewart took work in the mechanics of the stage when he was dir ector of the Trheatre, as well as on the fundamentals of acting. He also did special work for Mr. Deani last year helping with the stage settings, and the lighting arrangements. He is quite cap 8,eas an electrician, which is an in valuable asset to the stage dlirector, be cause lighting effects play an important role in modern dramatic productions. Mr. Stewvart is well known on the campts an.d has participated in numer ous student activities. TeSanitary cafe ACordial Welcome, T1asty Food Reasonably Priced Pne 9138 1345 Main St )-ED NE Alpha Delta Pi Gives "Babies" Dance Alpha Delta Pi entertained with a tea dance at the home of Miss Elise LeGare on Senate street last Wednesday after noon in honor of some of the freshmen. Beta Epsilon chapter, being the "baby" chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, carried out the baby idea in the favors that were given to the freshmen, among which were rattlers and bibs with "A.D.Pi" on them The members wore caps and aprons and took the part of nurses for the young freshmen. After dancing, a delicious salad course was served, and candy, cakes iced - in white, and decorated with a blue "A. D. Pi" on them, were also served. Uscr---e Hyatians Elect Foy Stevenson as Leader Social for New Girls voted by Society for Wednesday at 4 O'clock Miss Foy Stevenson, junior in the School of Journalism, was elected pres ident of the Hypatian Literary Society by acclamation Wednesday afternoon at the first regular meeting of the year.Miss Kate Sherer, senior in the School of Education, was chosen vice-president. Other officers elected were: Miss Anne L. New, critic, a junior in Education; secretary, Miss Dorothy Penland, a jun ior in Journalism; treasurer, Miss Dor othy Whaley, a junior in the Academic School; recorder, Miss Roberta Love lace, a senior in Edttcation; and monitor, Miss Maude Brazelle, a sophomore. The society will entertain informally next Wednesday afternoonq in honor of the new members and freshmen. USC Zeta Phi's Entertain With Informal 'Parties Bridge Party Wednesday and Tea Thursday in Honor of Pledges A delightful bridge party was given Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 6 o'clock by Zeta Phi- club at the home of Miss Elizabeth Tompkins on Green street. 'l'he club colors, blue and white, were used throughout the rooms which were lovely with shaded lights and flowers. The party was given in honor of the c'.ub pledges. Four tables were placed for bridge, and about fifteen called af terwards, among whom were the clob patroresses, Mrs. Wilson G. Harvey, Mrs. D. E. Hansen, and Mrs. Charles F. Mercer. A fter the games the score prize, a 'ingerie set, wvas presented to Miss Ger-. Aldine Cate. A delicious salad course with coffee was served to the players and those calling. On Thursday afternoon Zeta Phi club entertained with an informal tea in compliment to the new pledges at the home of Miss Martha Milhous, president of the club. Field House, Junior - -Appears on Campus To be Used as RoonM for Co-Ed Equipment-Soccor Balls Hockey Sticks, etc. With the opening of school has come the appearance of a new building on the enimpus--the "Field House, Junior," as Misss Helen Smith, director of physical edlucation for wvomen, has jocosely called it. This house, situated on the hockey field, directly across from the Bohemian house, is to be utilized as a storeroom for the co-ed athletic equipment. Though small ini appearance, its sturdy chests, extending on both sides from door to door, furnish ample room for the hockey sticks, soccer balls, shin guards, and basetalls1. wSs I Euphrosyneans Hold First Season's Meet To Give Reception to New Girs in Euphradlan Hall Thura day Night The Euphrosynean literary society held its first regular meeting of the year in Euphradian hall last Wednesday after noon at 5:15. The main feature of the program was music by. the Riggins' brothers. Other nunbers on the pro gram were a reading by Miss Jewel Parrott, jokes by Miss Lucille Lemmon, apd current events by Miss Virginia Muller. In addition to having the names of new girls brough up for membership, the society voted to have a reception in the Euphradian hall on Thursday night to which all new girls and the other three literary societies are invited to attend. All, new girls are urged to be present at the next meeting of the one of the co ed societies, and to have their name of fered for membership. Both co-ed societies meet on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Mildred Cone, president of the society, says that the outlook for the coming year is most hopeful, and Miss Alice Mikell, the critic, is arranging to have some unique and interesting pro grams presented during the year.
