Sidelights [ By Bill Gaines CAROLINA SPIRIT has at last come into its own. Saturday night more than four hundred students from the University took Main street by storm with their various costumes more bizarre than conventional, and their cheering more vociferous than musical. Never has the after-game fever run higher than it did then. LED BY cheer leader Brock the entire crew paraded up, down and over Main street to their heart's ,content, singing, cheering and utterly ignor ing the majesty of the law which looked on tolerantly while the re awakened spirit of Carolina ran ram pant. CAROLINA'S DEFEAT of Chicago was the biggest upset in football circles since the comparatively little known college of Centre journeyed up to Cambridge and socked Har vard in the wash for a well-earned victory. THE VICTORY over Chicago will be perpetually linked with two names, those of Ed Zobel and Carlisle Beall. These two ball-toters battered, pounded, squirmed through and skirted the Chicago line until the Maroon turned green under the gills tnd threw down with a gesture of dispair the bullet-proof helmets that the Chicago teams have been wear ing for the last few years. ONE OF the most sincere compliments a that Carolina has received in recent CM years occured Saturday afternoon on Melton Field while the Garnet and c3 Blank standard bearers were battling c.. in Chicago. On three distinct oc casions the cheering section of the Columbia high school contingent . 'watching the Columbia high-Bailey football game rose to their feet and v gave a complimentary cheer for Carolina with as much pep as they yelled their own team on to a victory against the soldiers from Greenwood. THE PLAYERS that went to Chicago have gained at least - one of the many material fruits that they will gather as a result of pushing the hole in on Chicago. Mr. Lever, manager of the football training table promised the squad as much ice cream as they could put away pro vided they put the skids under the Maroon pig skinners. This they did and that, likewise, he did. Monday night, the boys were treated to as plentiful a display of ice cream as it is well for human endurance to cope with. The occasion, as the society columnists are wont to put it, was enjoyed by all. Zobel's toeing abilit'y would have put Gilda Gray to ignominious shame. On every exchange of punts Eddie gain e,d ten yards or over on the opposi tion, and it was this same Zobel who snakedi his way six yards through the Chicago forward wall for the only marker of the game. The thirteen men that saw actual ser vice in the fray with Chicago and USc Pharmacists Hold Their First Meeting Professor Motley And Strother Address Membrs of Society On Timely Subjects The Carolina Pharmaceutical society held its first regular 'meeting of the year Thursday night at LeConte college, the purpose being to gain the interest of the freshman class by showing them the benefits of the society. The speakers of the evening wvere Dr. E. T. Motley and Professor W. 'r. Strother, the former's subject being the origin and purpose of the society andl the latter's "The Possibilities of the Future Drr.ggist." At the close of the lecture R. L4. White, president made several remarks concern ing the constitution of the society. During the meeting refreshments were served by the members. The officers of the Society are: R. I. Vic Preirdent; 'nhoase nlair, Scent:r "Red Caps" Proves Fitting Headline Larger Number Asked To See Gamecocks Entrain for Trips "Red Caps See Carolina Off," was the heading of an article recently appearing in a Colmbia newspaper, referring to the handful of freshmen down at the Seaboard station Wednesday night to see OUR TEAM off to Chicago. "Red Caps," was certainly anf appro , priate title for the crowd seeing the team off, for the black boy baggage snatchers who are commerly referred to as "Red Caps," were in greater numbers than the few loyal supporters who were willind to walk five blocks at the agreeable time of ten o'clock in perfect weather. The Gamecock at press time last issue could not find out exaatly when the team would entrain, but some other organiza tions would arrange to find out when the team leaves on all trips and make an an nouncement in chapel, and post a notice on the bulletin board. At least 500 men should be on hand every time the team leaves or conies in from a trip. Freshmen usually respond the remaining eleven that were ready to go in deserve the deepest thanks of the University and the state at large, for they have brought fame to the University that no single act has ever before gained. More power to you, aamecocks! THE TEAM that defeated Chicago played as a team and in many Inci dences cases of individual valor were overshadowed by the smooth running of the football machine that Laval has evolved. The whole team is worthy of the highest commenda tion and to Coach Laval goes the credit for performing the seemingly impossible. To cut my story short, I was finally rescued by a searching party after a terrible experience. It was a wonder ful feeling as I sat at the mouth of the cavern telling my friends that I would not go back in there for love nor money. I meant it-until I reached for my can of Edgeworth. It was gone, and I recalled dropping something during the excitement in the cave. It is queer what a man will do when his favorite tobacco is concerned. I realized that without my tobacco it would be as bad as being lost in the cavity-so I crawled back. It was a grand and glorious feeling as my hand came in contact with the Aristocrat of Tobacco.
