Installed On Carolina Campus Robert Smythe, Grand Treasurer, Makes Speech At In stallation What is predicted to be the most bril liant fraternity season at Carolina since the return of these social clubs' was ushered in last Tuesday night at the Jefferson Hotel when the XI chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity held its installation banquet. The installation ceremonies were held earlier in the day Tuesday at the chapter house on Pen dleton street. More than 300 invitation were issued to the alumni of the fraternity, among those attending'being Robert A. Smythe, grand treasurer, who was the main speakers of the evening, and George M. Ivey, district princeps. Also present were visitors from the University of North Carolina, Duke University, North Caro lina State College at Raleigh and the Presbyterian College at Clinton, S. C. Charter members of the XP chapter are George E. Olson, dean of the school of commerce at the University and fa: ulty adsisor, Charles W. Coker, Jr., Norman E. Cullem, Monckton Hook, F. Hook, F. Burt Fitch, Pr., Leslie W. Ed wards, William Donclan, Julian W. Shields. William W. Williams, W. H. Ford, Oscar Frank Thornton, and Eu gent J. Keels. Other members are Bouchier Sims, Emmett Gale, Edgar Roper, Ralph Hanahan, T. Hamlin Briggs, Jr., Wil liam Banks, James W. Fouche, and John Wells. Pledges are Julian F. Beall, Cinard M. Blount, E. Power Rogers, Claude Pritchard Davis, Jr., and A. M. The hand some mirror that hung in the hall at the entrance of the Woman's building was takcen, seven shades, and the medicine chest. All the shades and a couple of mattresses were taken by the secretive mauraders from the Arrow house, as well as an appreciable amount of person al belongings. April 30, 1928 Larus & Bro. Co. Richmorid, Va. Dear Sirs: Two years ago last winter I went into the Red Lake gold fields in Canada. It was a tough trail from Hudson, over 140 miles of snow and ice. There were fourteen of us on the trail going in, and frequently at night when seated around a big camp fre, some one would ask me for a pipeful of fl'geworth. These Canadian boys sure like our Edgeworth. In four weeks' time I ran out of Edgeworth. I was glad to get 'most any old tobacco. One day, however, I dropped in to Dad Brown's tent, a 72-year-old pros pector, and seeing a can of Edgeworth on an improvised table1 back there 150 miles from the "steel,' I perked up at once, saying, "Dad, I'm plum out of tobacco-how's chances for a pipe ful?" "Help yourself," he said. So pulling my heav duty pipe from my pocket, I loade It with Edgeworth, packing it in so tightly that I couldn't get the least bit of a draw. I excused myself for a moment, and stepped outside to remove about three pipefuls to put in my pouch. Dad stepped out, saying, "You're worse than any Scotchman I ever saw." Then I confessed. I told him what happened to my Edgeworth-that I was just dying for a smoke, and he understood right away. He said, "Boy, Edgeworth is mighty scarce in these parts, but I reckon I can spare what's left of that can. Help yourself." Coach Billy Lavql is a stickler for certain things in football and one of them is a strict adherence to training rules. He believes that if a man is to give his best on the football field that there are certai-n regulations he must live up to. First of all, the coach believes that members of the squad should keep strictly up with their classroom work. It is his observation that a player who is having difficulty in keeping up with his classroom work is so worried, or should he, over that fact that he can not give his best on the football field. Therefore the coach insists that every member of the squad shall do his school work satisfactorily. There is no place on the football team for the man who does not apply himself in his studies. The Carolina mentor also believes in plenty of practice. It takes lots of work to round a player and to keep him in good condition, he thinks, and he insists on punctuality in this. '1'ha- the Carolina players will have no time for loafing will be seen by the schedule which the cach has prepared for them. They have their classes in the morning. After lunch they go to the field for a hard afternoon's prac tice. A fter dinner, skull practice is held, following this the men are sent to their rooms for studying. is hoped that the stolen articles will be rettrrned. L.Kir 1523 M Library and Other Building Improved Walls 'ainted and Magazine Reading Rooms inatalled Keeping step with the times, the Uni versity has inaugurated a building pro gram that will soon make the Univer sity campus one of the most beautiful in the state. This is best evidence in the improvements now being made on the library. On the second floor the walls have been done in pale green and ivory. The ceiling in light tan and ivory. New ad justable book shelves have taken the places of the old ones. Steel frame windows have been installed. All of the old section of the library has been re covered with fire proof roofing, and three new copper monitors take the places of the old ones. All flooring will be fire and sormd proof. The walls of the hall are painted in white. A magazine reading room with shelves around the wall, and equipped with mahagony furniture, takes the place of the dark class room, men's and women's rest rooms, and offices have been set off by partitions in the right basement. (Even Andrew has an office of his own.) 'P he columns in front of the library have been recasted. One of the old boilers in the old heat .ing plant having been condemned has necessitated the installation of a new one.
