tend Installation
Pi chapter of Phi Pi Phi, national
social fraternity, was installed at the
University Saturday when the menm
bers of the Mu club were initiated into
the fraternity by two national officers
and a six man degree team from the
chapter of Phi Pi Phi at North Caro
lina State.
The members of the club were initi
ated into the mysteries of the Greek
Letter society Saturday night. A
brilliant installation banquet was held
at the Rose-Mary tea room, followed
by a dance at the fraternity's club
house on Senate street.
Roy C. Cobb, secretary of Mu club,
acted as toastmaster at the banquet.
The first speaker was. Fred M. Clark
of Chicago, national president of Phi
Pi Phi.
Mr. Clark spoke of the ideals of
Phi Pi Phi and all Greek societies but
urged the new fraternity men not to
forget that there were 50 per cent of
all college students who were deserv
ing of fraternity membership who
could not be included in the limited
number of clubs. He said that one of
the fundamental principles of his
fraternity had been to try and bring
about a better feeling between frater
nity and non-fraternity men and urged
the Carolina chapter to do likewise.
A. C. Van Zant of Chicago, national
secretary of Phi Pi Phi, urged the
men to remember that the early life
of a fraternity is always a struggle but
that the faculty is always ready to
help. He exhorted the men to always
h)e faithful to their university and fra
ternity as active and alunmni members
and to help make the already rich
traditions of Carolina even more rich.
Dean Leonard T. Baker, in the ab
sence of President D. M. Douglas,
wvelcomed the new frat to the Carolina
campus. He urged the men to realize
what the true ideals of Phi Pi Phi
were and to live up to them. He said
that fraternities, while encouraging.
scholarship, etc., were also to in
crease the pleasure of living. He
urged the men not to become self
centered but to lend strenght and pres..
t'ge to the fraternities of the univer
sity and the world by living up to the
idleals set by the societies.
W. V. Eller, president of Xi chapter
of North Carolina State; Dr. E. T.
Motley, faculty advisor of the newly
installed chapter; Mr. Holliday, of
Alpha Zeta Phi, Wofford college local
petitioning Phi Pi Phi; Thomas M.
Craig. president of the Carolina stu
dent body; Billy Elliott, president of
the Carolina Pan-H-ellenic council; and
C Buster Joyner, president of Pi chap
ter of Phi Pi Phi, were called on for
a few words before the banquet ended.
Pi chapter is the 16th group in Phi P'
Phi, which was founded in 1915 at the
University of Chicago, and is the third
group in the South.
