CAROLINIANS
IN DUAL DEBATE
WITH GEORGIA
Russell And Karesh Win Un

Affray Friday
ARGUE FOR GOV. AL SMITH
Karesh Lauds Integrity And
Ability-Russell Pleads
For Tolerance
Upholding the affirmative of the
query, "Resolved: 'Ihat the Democratic
Party Should Nominate Al. Smith 4I
New York for the Presidency," the
University of South Carolina's debating
team composed of Donald Russell, and
Joseph Karesh, won a unanimous deci
sion over the negative team of the Uni
versity of Georgia, composed of J. H.
Oliver and I. K. Hay last Friday night
in the chapel.
The &bate Friday night, wras the
fourth and the last of a series which ha.,
taken Russell and Karish into the states
of Virginia and North Carolina. The
first three debates had been no-decision
contests.
Karesh, as the first 's peaker of the af
firmative, showed the rise of Smith
from obscurity to greatness, devoting
his time solely to a discussion of the
integrity and the ability of Smith. Rus
sell, closing for the affirmative, anwereds
the objections of the negative that
Smith is a wet, a Catholic, and a mem
her of Tammany Hall. He concluded
with an appeal for the exercise of to
lerance and a return to the principles
of Jeffersonian democracy.
Oliver, the first on the negattive, argued
that the social status of Smith should
militate against his being president,
that his ability did not fit him for the
presidency. Hay, closing for the nega
tive, opposed Smith on the grounds of
his being a wet, a member of Tammany
Hall, and said that while he (lid not
oppose Smith because of his being a
Catholic, others did and such would
lower the chances of the Democrats in
the race with Republicans.
The rebuttals were both effective
and interesting, both sides meeting
issues squarely. South Carolina re
sorted to sarcasm at times but he was
not by herself, Georgia engaging the
same weapon.
The debate, was presided over by R.
T. Green, president of the rising jun
ior law, class. Nigel League acted as
chief marshall, while servitig as the
committee of judges were Messrs. J. L.
Mimnaugh, Columbia merchant; H. P.
Green, Columbia attorney, and F. D.
Marshall, former city councilman.

Declaring himself in favor of open
politics, clean and honorable, and the
retention of the publications in the
hands of the societies, Joseph Karesh
was inaugurated as junior president of
the F,uphradian lterary society last
Tuesday night.
Opening his inaugural by thanking the
members for the honor of presaiey.
Karish said that there was no office uponi
the campus. in his opinion greater than
the office which he rowv holds. He re
minded the members that their's wvas a
great society. it was founded nearly a
they should be proud of their member
ship.
Denouncirg vivorously those who de
clared themselves against politics and
yet through some wvhim of fate slipped
into the choiciest of campus posi''ions.
Karish urged his listeners to oppose
such men and such questiouable tactics,
pleading for open poli'ics.
In regardl to the matter of pub!ica
tione, he said that the societies had
conducted them sat isfac.torily, that they
should-be retained. If a ma~n can come
to meetings every week certainly he
deserves ai little more control .than thosed

BUCK'S
EXPERIENCE
What Would You Do In A
- Case Like This
By BILL GAINES
Buck was walking down the street
after having absorbed a pound or so
of choice "t-bone" (you are right,
Bedelia! He had eaten at the boarding
lady's!) when, suddenly, he felt a tug
at the bottom rear of his trousers.
Now, had Buck been in Australia with
a predilection for deductive reasoning,
-he would have probably conjected that.
an ostrich had slipped up on him and
had mistaken the pinstripe in his
trousers for a worm; or if he had
been at the- corner of Main and Ger
vais streets with the instincts of a
Holmes in his breast, he might have
thought that a pint was about to be
palmed off. Lacking, however, a
Sherlockian turn of mind and being
on the campus of a prominent soith
ern institution of yearning where men
are politicians and women are stilll
desirable, he turned to see the cause.
There, two feet high and three
shivers high was what he would have
said on casual inspection, but not for
publication, was a full-blooded mon
grel. The aforementioned two feet of
height was founded on four of the
most outrageous paws that Buck had
ever seen. Have you ever s:opped -to
think how ludicrous a pair of crane's
legs would appear appended to the
feet of a duck? Consider that you
have Buck's first impression of this
admixture of misinformation on canine
H closed his speech with a plea for
co-operattion and a pledge of fidelity
and faithfulness to the society saying
he would do his best, that the mem
hers would never regret the confidence
that they had seen fit to repose in him.
Thomas Moore Craig's exaugural ad
dress was very brief. He took biot a
short time to thank the memb.: for
the support which they had given him
(luring his admii.istration. He reminded
the members of the honor which was
theirs as a member of the society and in
closing asked for the members to give
Karesh their support and co-operation.
The inauguration of other officers was
put aside unitil the next mee:ing, this
to allow the memb.:rs to adiour-i to the
coronation of the May queen.

Finds Right
Tobacco for
the Tropics
Larus & Bro. Co. October 6, 1926
Richmond, Va., U. S. A.
Gentlemen:
Most all well-known tobaccos smoke
well in a cold or temperate climate,
but very few in a tropical climate.
They are mostly too heavy, don't seem
to be blended right-at least that is
my opinion gained from practical ex
perience.
However, Edgeworth is the same in
any climate. Again that is my opinion
gained by practical experience.
I cannot get the same pleasure out
of any brand of tobacco that. I can out
of Edgeworth, and I have tried many
-and paid fancy prices, too. It costs
real money tosmoke imported tobaccos
here; the import duty is very high.
Anyway, we crmnot have everything
we would like in these countries, so we
hold on to all :he little pleasures possi
ble. Now you snow why I smoke
Edgeworth.
Yours respectfully,
R. C. Rigg
