Rare Books In
Library
BY R. M. KENNEDY
Grolier
One of the finest of our incunabula
is the "Historia fiorentina tradotta da
Donato Acciaoli," by Leonardo. Bruni
(Aretino), printed by Bartholemeo di
Libri, Florence, 1492.
Interesting in itself as a specimen of
early (15th century) book-making, it
is doubly valuable for the cryptic Gro
liery Lugdunem et Amiconum."
Did Grolier really own this book, and
isthis his handwriting? It is a question
impossible of verification or disproof
perhaps, but fascinating nevertheless.
Jean Grolier (1479-1565), viscount
d'Aguisy and treasurer of France under
Francis I, was a famous collector of
books, "valeable or curious for subject,
material, workmanship or binding. He
was a master of art of elegant book
binding, and his volumes are highly
praised by bibliophiles." (I quote from
the New Internationall Encyclopedia).
He had most of his books bound to
order and they bear usually, two legends:
on the front cover, "Portio mea domine
sit in terra viventium," and on the back
cover, "lo. Grolerii et Amicorum." The
3rittannica, from which we get this in
formation, has a plate showing the two
inscriptions on a Grolier binding, beau
tifully tooled.
The New International says that Gro
lier's book covers were generally in
brown leather, with Renaissance patterns,
stnipes and plant arabesques.
Our binding answers this description
in every particular, the plant arabesques
being faintly visible on the outside paper
edges.
It is stated that Grolier's library of
3000 volumes remained in his family un
til the end of the 18th century, when
they were sold and scattered; further
that only about 400 volumes are now
known to he his, most of them in the
Natioral Library at Paris.
We are convinced, from the evidence
of legend and binding, that we have one
of the great bibliophile's precious hooks.
though how it strayed so far from home
we do not know.
Grolier's name is perpetuated in the
"Grolier Club," book lovers, of New
York City.

Carolina Will Have To Enlarge
Area If Student Increase
Continues
Growth at the University has been
very rapid during the past six or seven
years, and if the increase continues at
the same rate for the next decade the
trustees will have tto look elsewhere for
room o expand. Nearly all of the avail
abe room on the campus has been taken
and the University has very little ad
jacent property it can u se.
In connection with this it will be in
teresting to know that the trustees have
the power to codemn any nearby property
that they have use for.
A law was passed by the South Caro
lina General Assembly and signed by
the governor on March 21, 1924, giving
the trustees the right to condemn any
lands that they are able to show neces
sary for hhe expanision of the Univer
sity. All school trustees in the state
are given the same right.
The law declares that public school
commissions and boards of trustees of
school districts have the right to coa
demn property, "for the erection thereon
of any addition or extension of any public
school house or building already es
tablished or for public school house play

groraids or other use for such public
schools.
First, however, they would have to'
prove to the town or city council that
such lands were necessary.
Should the University decide to con
demn nearby property and the owners
refused to sell at a reasonable price the
City council would appoint six free
holders to meet six representatives of
the owners of the land and fix a fair
price, and any damages. III case of
disagreement the Commissioners could
call in one other commissioner to de
cide.
Either side could appeal to the Cir
cuit court, whose verdict would be final
unless a new trial was granted by the
jt'dge. However, the condemnation pro
ceedings would not be suspended by the
appeal. Persons condemning the prop
erty would have to deposit the amount of
the award of the commissioners and
representatives of the owners, and in
addition sufficient bond to cover any
damages allowed the owners, with the
Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas.
Therefore Carolina's growth is not
limited to the present campus. If neces
sary the trustees could condemn all ad
jacent property. with the approval of
the City council.
