&S VOICE SHOWS PATHOS
Says He Is Strong For Freedom
But Religious Tolerance
Is Strong Fort
"I am going to do all in my power
to establish a chapter of the American
Civil Liberies Union in. this state,"
said Jack Bates in an'interview grant
ed to a reporter of the Yellow Sheet
yesterday. "The principles of free
speech and free expression of thought
must be kept alive if our country is to
become greater." -
The great exponent of tolerance
spoke vehemently and convincingly as
is his wont. His splendid black eyes
flashed fire and lie seemed to be the
re-incarnation of Thomas Paine, H. I,.
Mencken, Harry Lauder and other
"liberals" and philanthropists."
Continuing, Bates said, "It hurts me
iore than I can tell you to see the
great amount of intolerance which ex
ists in this, my own, my native land."
His voice contained, all the pathos of
"Way Down Fast," "What Price
Glory," and Henry Ford's apology.
While emotion completely slew the
speaker for the time being, I ran over
in my mind the accomplishments and
activities of this great intellect. In his
capacity of circulation mai3ager of The
Gamecock, Bates (or Jackie, as he is
known to his admirers, who are legion)
performed great services for his Alma
Mater in preserving the freedom of
the press, insisting that The Gamecock
be sent out even when it contained
matter which might be construed as a
reflection on himself. For this tre
mendous exercise of the will Jackie
(being one of his admirers) received
chairs and chairs.
Not alone in the field of journalistic
freedom has his star ascended high.
Religious tolerance is also his strong
.uit, forte. big gun and other Nicara
guan (pardon, U. S. Marine) expres
sions.
Having wrung out his handerchief.
our Jackie expounded further, "Not
only in matters concerning religion and
free speech would I like to see a
change. I would like to see the time
when men will recognize in all matters
that the other fellow might be. right,
rather than president, and that an
open mind must be kept at all times.
The trouble with this campus is that it
does not want to be led out of its
darkness. The darkness just makes
it sleepy."
At this point his voice rose to a
scream, losing the delightful tang
engendered in the independent re
public of Batesburg-Leesville, and the
great man slithered under the bed, his
brain overwhelmned by the idea of
tolerance. Selah.

Miss Grace Saner

Blushing Crow-Ed Wili Appear
At Rivoli Next Friday
-.. Night
Miss Grace Saner, one of our fairesi
co-eds and who bears the distinction
of being from Prosperity, "The City
eqlual to its name," has announced that
she will enter immediately upon a tour
with the Hoax Vaudeville Co.
When it was reported that she had
signed the contract, a score of photo
graphers gathered in front of the Wo
man's Dormitory instantly and re
quested a few snapshots of her queenly
beauty. Daintily clad, Miss Saner
soon came forth to face a barrage of
cameras. Blushing at first from the
shock caused to her effervescent mod
esty, Miss Saner soon regained control
of her emotions and posed obligingly

When interviewed by reporters last
night, Miss Saner announced that she
will make her debut at the Rivoli
Theatre next Friday night, featuring
in "The Scarcity of Clothes," after
which she wilt leave for engagements
Miss Hellams Adopts
No-Light at Graydon
Attractive Matron Trusts Girls
Under Her Care
In Dark
Miss Martha Hellams, matron of
Graydon House, 1635 Green street, re
cently stated that she has adopted a
no-light system to be used at Graydon
House during dates. The girls under
Miss Hellams' care are to be trusted
in the dark and may allow their dates
to remain until twelve.
The above mentioned matron is quite
young and attractive and says that she
too will have her quota of dates. It
is understood that the other matrons
will also adopt the Hellams' plan.
Mr. Ben Lucas stated last night that
the no-light system being used at
Graydon House was detrimental to
young men. Under close observation
the writer found that Mr. Lucas on
Sunday night of March 25, mistook the
maid for his date and this "kiss in the
dark" caused Mr. Lucas to take his
stand against the system. This how
ever, does not prove the Hellams' plan
a failure.
Miss Florence Johnson has gotten
up a petition asking that the no-light
