CAROLINA NINE TO MEET MD. U. AT EARLYDATE Season to Open With Southern Conference Opponent on Davis Field PROSPECTS SEEM BRIGHT March winds are still blowing, but April's showers will soon appear, and with them the bang of bats will be heard on Davis field when the Carolina base ball nine meets the University of Mary land in the opening game with a South ern Conference opponent. Speculations can, and have already been made, as to the dope for the success of the gamecocks this Season. At any rate the prospects seen bright, as evi denced by the fast play they are showing. Tihe boots and fumbles that were so evident at the first of the season are less frequent now, and each individual seems surer in hand, ing his chances. Almost every man on the team can hit and run well, and great improvement has been shown over last year. The only players missing from last year are Noian, Rogers and Burke. Rogers and Noan were infielders and their vacancies serve as the biggest pro'lem for the coaches. However, Red Adams and Tom Chandler are performing well in the fast play. Adams who was out of school last year, was on the varsity year before ast, playing outfield. He batted for an average of nearly 400 and in fielded well. He is showing up even better this year. Chandler is an out fielder also, but looks good in the in field. Bob \Vimberiy, Monk Clark. Bill Cooper, and M\lclrath, are playing nice ball iii the infield. Sailey seems to have cinched one of the outfield positions, and is batting equally as well, or better than last year. Jim Farr will likely be a regular with one man trying on. for the infield. prob ably playing the other position. Mike Winidus will probably ho.d down his old place at first base, although I'ower Rogers slipped over to trouble him one ,r two days. Mike is hitting them sound on the head and his heavy hitting should be a great asset to the team, as last year. Billy L.amar has little compe ition at second base and shouid again be the infielding star, as last year. Red Swink is g(oing good behird the ha , but is being given a hot time 'y Power Rogers. Both are batting well, so there should continue mome keen com petition at -his position. "Duck" Young, Barney Smith and Frank Pita are also working hard. PaI Ritch is slIIwinlg tip unusual,. well amontg the pitchers. ando his fas balls are worryivg the batters. Riggini.. athioug.h mighity wikli, is se tulig down anel showing to gooid advanitage. Bob Stoddard can Ilikelv be c on ced on to j)i ch his steady game thfat kept the Gamiecocks ini steady runming last year. Lefty Godshmal I, Scott, and H ugh Stodl dard, are improving and each one will probably see plenty of service. " The H ouse o f Qualitv y" Established in 1844 The R. L.BRYAN COMPANY Bincling. Coach Lavai's cohorts have already passed the most strenuous training for their hard schedule next year, and when the whistle blows next season for the openiig gaine with the Erskine Seceders. the Gamecock gridsters should be a well trained eleven. thoroughly familiar with the famous "I.aval Systecm." - INKPOT SPRING lOOTIIALL has developed several new players that have hitherto been obscured on the Carolina gridiron.
