Library Contains a
Treasure of Relics
Bible in Tongue of American
Indian Tribe Housed in
West Wing
Two cases in the west wing of the
library contain things of interest to all
students of the University and others
concerned in its history and traditions.
The west wing is called the museum
room because of the relics and other
things there.
Among the objects in the cases is an
old boo0k p)rintedl in London by Thomas
Raycroft in 1658 which L.as the coat
of arms of George I of England on
both the front and lback and which wvas
evidlently in a royal library. It is a
commentary on Antonius "His Itienr
ary, or Journies of the Roman Em
pire, so far as it concernth Britain"
by William Burton.
Another volume is an Aldine edi
tion, made in 1513 byv the founder of
the house, Aldus Manutius. It is in
the original binding and( was made by
the celebrated Venetian who, first used
italic type.
Of exceptional interest is an incun
abula, dated 1483. beautifully ilhunmit -
nations by monks.
Pliny's Natural History, another in
cunabula. dater 1479, has marginal an
niotatIons made by some unknown
scholar of the middle ages. Tlhe il

Among other thiings are several 01(1
diplomas, portraits, a Bible in the Ian
guage .of the American Indians, dated
1685, a war telegram to Pickens. and a
catalogue of the trustees, faculty and
students of the South Carolina Cil
lege dlatedl February, 1809. There were
five members of the faculty including
the president and a total of 85 students.

Carolina Fencers
Champs of South
At the meeting of the southern Fen
cing conference February 18. The
South Carolina team was declared
champions of the south for 1927. The
action of the conference was based
primarily on the victory of the Game
cocks over the North Carolina team.
The latter was defeated by the rather
lop sided score of 6-3.
The members of the South Carolina
team were: Reese (captain), Finkel
stein, Coker, Cuttino and Moore. The

proteges have proven the value of his
coaching in amateur fencing.

Gamecocks were coached by Professor
Rene Stephan, who has had experience
in fencing in both France and Ameri
ca. The system used by Professor
Stephan was the French. It was due
mainly to his excellent coaching that
the Gamecocks were able to make such

Carolina will enter the tournament for
southern championship in April or not.
Most of the .championship team of last
y--ar is back and there are several
other good fencers on the campus and
it is likely that the Gamecocks will
have a good chance to repeat this
year if they enter. The tournament is
to be held in Charleston April 14 13,
14, at the Citadel.
