CAMPUS knterprising Fresh C3 Wins Smoke Rights 4professor Lectures Through Smoke Haze and Does Not Bum Cigarette An interprising and bold, but half asleep, freshman strolled into an eight o'clock class the other morning. As he took his seat he remembered that he had not had his morning shot of nicotine, so without any evidence of fear, (as is the case with all freshmen their first few days at college) he ask the foilow ing question: "Sir, are you opposed to having stu dents smoking during this lecture?" The professor rose to the occasion in a splendid manner. "Why no, certainly not, if the rules of the buiiding do not prohibit it," he declared amidst the surprise of the stu dents. "I think that is a spiended 'idea Go ahead and smoke I do not mind." One of his problems was partly sol ved for those who had become intimately aequainted with Lady Nicotine would be at least awake for a part of the lecture. A minute later the scratching of matches could be heard throughout the room. Cigarette and pipes were pro duced and Lady Nicotine reigned su preme. Through the haze of smoke the professor proceeded with his lecture, re. fusing gracefuliy a cigarette offered him. Late-comers were surprised at the greeting they received for with a gen ial smile they were informed that smok ing was in order. The majority of the students expressed their delight with the arrangements except the few co-eds who remained silent, although a smile crept over their faces. Mitchur FEATURE Diverse Excuses Given for Absences Registrar Chase Receives Many Reasons Daily for not Meet ing Classes Excuses for absences filed with Regi strar Jack Chase are replete with honor and pathos. Diverse reasons are given for classroom and chapel absences, ranging from the stock excuse of per sonal ilness to the lad whose professor said lie had studied so hard for-an ex am that he was too nervous to take it. Grandmothers still retain their fav orite habit of dying, as attested by the fact that four boys have attended grand mother funerals during the past month. Ilhness in the family and car trouble are among the most popular reasons for absences. Severe colds inevitably foHow every rainy day, and most of the ab sentees have just recovered from mumps and measies and cannot go out in the inclement weather. Wow I Doctor and dental appointments are also popular. "Alarm clock faiied to go off ;" "Fam ily in town, had to sign important pap ers;" "Had to meet sister at train and entertain her in Columbia as she is go ing off to school;" "Had to go to church." Those are some of the plausi bie types but contain no element of ima gination. Consider the following: "Was lost in swamp two days and couldn't get back." "Had to attend police court." "Taking business course and had to study during chapel period." "Was best man at wedding." "Slept through class" declared one naive soul. "Forgot it," said another. "Was in library and didn't hear the bell." Truth must be stranger than fiction. But still others: "'Facuities' for transportation were inadequate." "Was at bed-side of moth er." Benedict Glee Club Renders Y Program Classical and Spiritual Selections Sung-Second Appearance at University Benedict College glee club gave a very interesting program in chapel iast Sun (lay night at the "Y" meeting, this be ing the second time that the students of this University have heard the mem bers of this organization sing during the year. Dr. Redfern, dean of the coilege, in troduced the singers, which consisted of a quartet from each sex. The pianist substituted in some of the selections as one of the members was absent. Classical selections as well as spiritu als were sung, and the program was var ied in many ways, preventing monotony. 'Te spirituals sung by the male quar tet were especially enjoyed by the audience, as shown by the repeated ap plause and encores. "Had to run the cows in the pasture," wrote one rural co-ed.
