University Selects Oregon Team Wed. Will Select Two Man Team to Debate Question of Ameri can Investment Preliminaries for the dual debate with Oregon State College will be held, ac cording to announcement, Wednesday night, February 15th in the Euphradian literary society hall at 7:30 o'clock. The team chosen to debate against Oregon on March 2nd will likewise debate against a team from Richmond Univer sity in Columbia on March 1st. Only undergraduates are eligible in this pre liminary. Carolina will select a two-man team to uphold the affirmative of the follow ing qudry, "Resolved: That American Investments in Foreign Countries should Receive Protection only from the Coun tries in which They Reside." It is- announced that all those going out for this preliminary must hand in their names to Joseph Karesh, secre tary of the Debating Council, on or be fore Tuesday at noon. Competition closes then. A notice to that effect has been posted on the bulletin board in front of the marshall's office and a notice to the same effect in the literary society box in front of LeGare. Notices for future contests and contests of the past' have appeared in this box and all those interested in debating are request ed to consult the box from time to time for information on forensic contests. Usc New Men Elected Into Block "C" Club Block "C's" Given to Initiates Old Men Receive Their Stars At the last meeting of the Block "C" club the following men were initiated: Drufus Griffin, Buster Joyner, Red Fulmer, Curtis Brock, Julian Beall, Ed. Zobel and Walter Joye. The following men were given either Bock' "C's" or stars for the last sea son's work: 1Bill Cooper, first star; George Keels, first star; Red Swink, second star; Bob Stoddard, block; Monkey Price, second star; Walter Joye, block; Ed. Zobel, block; Ralph Guariiio, first star ; JuLian Beall, block; Buster Joyner, block; Red Fulmer, block; Cutris Brock, block; Bob Wim berly, first star; Floyd Thomas, second star; Mike Windus, block; and Power Rogers, first star. A block "C" is given for the first year's varsity recognition and a star for each succeeding year. If a man is elect ed captain, he is given a crescent. USC Delta Club Members Give Entertainment Card Playing, Smoking and Vic trola Music Elivens the Occassion dMembers of the Delta club entertained their friends wvith a dlelightful smoker last Wednesday evening in the club room on the third floor of L,eGare col lege. Cards and conversation furnished the entertainment for the evening. Music by the Victor orthophonic, both dance and classical selections, served to eliven the general atmosphere. Refreshments consisting of ice cream and cake wvere served by members of the club's social committee. Tfhe club expects to have a number of entertainments of this nature dluring the present term. Plans arc now being made for a dance wvhich may be given at an early daite. The Delta club is petitioning Sigma Chi fraternity. Phi Beta Delta Frat Announces Pledges Phi Beta Delta, natisonal social fra ternity, wishes to announce the names of twvo additional pledges, Oscar Allen of Charleston, and Harry Zimmerman of Newark, both members of the freshman class. Phi Beta Delta, installed on the Uni versity campus on January 14th,. now has seven active member and five pledges. Arthur J Philip is the presi Junior Class Gives Mid-year Frolic Music by Carolina Collegian* to Take Place Saturday Night in Gmy. The college and social set of Colum bia and their friends in other South Carolina college centers and throughout the state are looking forward with in terest to the University mid-year frolic, sponsored by the Junior class of the' University in the University Gymnasium Saturday night, February 11th, from' 9:30 to 12:00, following the mid-winter German, which is to be danced in the Gymnasium on February 10th, the Fri lay night preceding. It is expected that a number of those from out of the city attending the German on Friday night, will remain over the week-end for the froiic Saturday night. The committee in charge of the dance announces that arrangements for the evening are complete. The Carolina Col legians will furnish music, and Univer sity faculty members, acting as chaper ones, will be in attendance. The dance is being sponsored as a medium through which to raise money to help defray expenses of a Junion Senior banquet which the junior class it is announced, expects to stage during the latter part of April. '11his will be the last gym dance before February 25. Officers of the ciass are: President, Ralph Lewis; vice president, E. P. Carolina wil select two two-man teams to represent her in the triangle, 'both an affirmative and a negative, on the question: "'Resolved: That the United States Should not Interfere in the Affairs of Latin America by Armed Force Except in Time of War." . All teams debate on neutral ground. Carolina's team journeys to Gainesville, there to oppose the negative team of the University of Tennessee. Carolina's negative team will make the trip to Knoxville, 'Tennessee to argue against the affirmative spokesmen of the Uni versity of Florida. Florida's negative and Tennessee's affirmative will match their verbal prowess in Columbia. Feb ruary 27th, is the date for the final con test. Carolina was last year represented by Edward Pritchard of Charleston, W. D. Simpson of Columbia, R. Guy Tyler of Norway, and Joseph Karesh of Colum bia. USC treasurer, Evans Cannon; Historian D. J. Kinder. Tlhe retiring officers are president, Frank Harrison; secretary, C. C. Sox; Evans Cannon and D. J. Kinder were reelected to their respective offices. At this meeting Mr. J. A. Officers Godshall, President; Farr, Vice President; Gasque Secretary an:d Treasurer At a meeting of the Commerce clu'b yesterday the following officers were elected: F. C. Godshall, president, suc ceeding Frank Harrison; J. S. Farr, Jr., vice president, succeeding Marvin B. Mitchum; B. P. Gasque, secretary and treasurer, succeeding E. H. Zeigler. The Commerce club was organized about December 15, 1927, for the pur pose of promoting scholarship and en ttusiasm among students of commerce. Weekly meetings are held at which pres ent day questions of economics are dis cussed. Men of distinction address the lub at times on probiems that concern themselves with economics. Interesting programs have been arranged for the near future. Delta Sigma Pi fraternity is being petitioned by the club.
