OPPOSES MILITARY SYSTEM
H. L. Says That the Lecture is
Best for American
Minds
( T-he Aew Sludent Service)
"I am thoroughly convinced that too
many young Aniericans are now going
to college and that their presence is
greatly 'impeding the work of the col.
leges. Certainly it should be possible to
devise some scheme to weed out the un
fit." Thus spake Henry L. Mencken to
a reporter for the Cornell Sun, in one of
several interviews recently granted to
"ollege papers.
Mr. Mencken, we are told, "is opposed
to the coliege for the purpose of intellec
tial education. With Nathan lie holds
that its greatest benefits are social."
Of compulsory military training, the
editor of tie Alcrcury said: "The mili
tary training ilea seems to tme absurd.
I see no reason why the college student
should be conscripted and not the young
nian outside."
And of the Jecture system: "The
American system, it seems to tie, is bet
tcr for Americans than the Oxford sy
stem. It is obviously iore ini accord
with the habits of mind of our people."
And of fraternities: "Regarding fra
ternities, I know nothing. It is common
ly alleged that they foster snobbery. But
I see no objection to snobbery person
ally; all fraternal men are snobs in some
way or another. That the fraternities
exalt fifth-raters and overlook men of
merit may be true, but the accusation
might be leveled against any other hi
man institution."
Mr. Mencken urges all who feel the
urge to write, first to obtain steady em
ployment. Until recently he suggested
bootlegging, but the strength of com
petition has led to advocacy of taxi
driving and similiar occupations.

University Y Women
Discuss Religion
Object of Meeting Was tp Per
fect a Purpose That Meets
Needs of Y.W.
"We, the members of the Young
Woman's Christian Association of the
University of South Carolin united in
dhe desire to realize full and creative
Ife through a growing knowledge of
God.
"We determined to have a part in
making this life possible for all people.
" In this task we seek to understand
Jesus and Follow Him," was the pro
posed pturpose of all Y.W.C.A.'s that
was discussed pro and con at the meet
i:I! of the V.W. last night.
The discussion was condncted from
the floor, about a dozen girls contribut
.ng thoughts an'd ideas. Among the in
teresting things discussed in connection
with this question were: what is your
conception of God? How do you see
God most often, in people, sunsets
lowers? What is your conception of
Jesus? Ought our conception 'Change, or
always remain the same. Some girls
h;aw God in people, some times old
women who had come through the bat
tIes of life smiling, some times a negro
who was fired with a vision for her race,
some saw God most in the sacred atmos
phere of a church. Some saw Him in
:a cloud, or mighty music.
The question of a creative life also
brought up much interesting discussion.
just when is life full and not so crowd
ed it is empty? What are the things
we (o as college students that make life
full and creative for ourselves as well
as others?
The object of this discussion is to
perfect a purpose that meets the needs
Of Y.W.'s everywhere, and one that is
broad enough and full enough to an
swer all requirements of earnest young
women everywhere who are really inter
ested in seeking to know more about the
life that is full and creative.
