Parris Island Marines Put Fast
Five on Floor for Carolina's
First Opposition
Carolina opened the 1928 basketball
season last Saturday night by trouncing
the Parris Island Marines 54 to 38 in a
game which was very well played con
sidering that it was the year's first.
The Gamecocks sailed off to a fair
lead at the initial whistle and steadily
increased their score as the contest pro
gressed. Stoney continually made sub
stitutions in order to test the true value
of his men under fire.
The Marines had a fast and powerful
team and were not out of the fight by
any means.
Captain Heinie Fair, as is his wont,
took things easily during the first half
and opened up in the final stanza with
shots long, close and difficult which daz
led the Marine guards. Buster Hoi
combe came back to the Carolina court
'after nearly a season's absence and made
several fine shots besides playing smooth
floor game.
Fair drew first blood by tipping a re
bounding wild shot into the basket.
White was fouled by Hart a moment
later and the lanky center added another
point. Bishop made the count 3 to 2,
but Monk Clark ran under the Carolina
basket a moment later and flipped an
easy one in. Hart, Marine, scored and
Carolina made several baskets before
their opponents from the City by the Sea
were able to tally again. Buster Hol
combe and White were shooting goals
with regularity for the Gamecocks.
Due to a mistake of the timekeeper,
the spectators were startled by an un
timely roar of the timer's whistle which
came two minutes too soon. Both teams
put on their "long ones" and headed for
the dressing rooms. 'lhey were called
back however and the half continued un
til the regular twenty minute period
terminated.
Hart, center for the Soldiers, was ap
parently their best. Bishop played an
alert game at guard.
Monk Clark who is being tried out at
guard this year, showed tip well. Win
dus and Chandler also were good.
With eight minutes to pliy in the
final half, Carolina was ahead 41 to 31.
The Marines scored a pair of field goais
and the Camecocks "froze" the sphere.
'lihis forced the Marine defense to break
away from the Carolina goal and gave
the University men opportunity to pass
to the covetedl territory at will. Fair,
Clark and White scored handily, running
the score to 54 before the fracas ended.

ment that will take place within the
next few wveeks. 'There will be no var
sity team th'is year, therefore those who
'aren't the best can make a place on their
team. There is a chance for every girl.

played before or not.
All ye co-eds, new and old, young and
aged, are urged to make your team the
"dark horse" of the tournament. Watch

What a surprise that news gave us
when the first whisperings reached
the campus. The athletic councih has
secured a master coach. They have
select-d a man who has made a won
derful name for* himself and Fur
man University. Carolina is glad
that lie is coming. To you, Coach

LAVAL WAS EXPECTED , to begin
on his- new job about January 5th,
but was delayed in getting his busi
ness affairs in Greenville straighten
ed out and will not arrive before
Saturday or Sunday.
AN I'TIEM OF INTEREST in Wed
nesday's State was to the effect that
p former Carolina mentor had tak
en over' the reins of gridiron and
diamond coaching at William and
Mary College. Bocock resigned as
head coach at Carolina last June af
ter a two and a half year regime.
THE INDOOR. Gamecock is showing
mid-season form here just at the
beginning of the basketball season.
They play fast ball. As might he
expected, their passes are a little
wild at times, but time and practice
Will iron that out.
CAPTAIN HEINIE FAIR is in a
"fair" way of being an all-confer
ence forward again if he keep up
the good work. Fair is undiluted
poison at goal shooting.
BUSTER HOLCOMBE is nmking his
comeback this year, and is playing
well. Monk Clark shows more and
more in every game, how worthy
he is of being labelled "Bid Roger's
second."
LEW WHITE always ranks high
among the scorers and lie is setting
the woods afire. Windus and Walt
Chandler are both playing stellar
ball.
"IENEMENT FOOTBALL is yet on
the menu. The lists are narrowing
however. and the winner will proh
abiy be decided next week. Tie
games have kept the season running
overtime.
COACH LAVAL is going to leave the
basketball and baseball teams to Bur
nett Stoney this winter and spring
and is going to lay the greatest
stress on spring football practice. He
will drill the men long and hard
and Coach Bifly doesn't allow much
loafing.
TRACK PRACTICE is on now, though
it will not be in full sway until after
exams. Coach McFadden is in need
of good men and is calling for can
didates.

Gamecocks Take Game

field house wvhen the Blue Stocking five
from the Presbyterian College was (de
feated, 38 to 22.
P. C. gave the Gamecocks a merry
battle in the initial period and at the end
led by a sirgle point. Wiison dIribbled
b)rilliantly and his stellar playing was the
p)aramounit strength of the P. C. team.
In the finial half, Carolina took the
lead with a field goal at its opening, but
the BRue Stocking five went ahead again
by a lone point. The Gamecocks forged
ahead after this and wvere never seriously
threatened.
Heinie Fair was again the shining light
of the night. Monk Clark (lid some nif
ty work. Miike Winduis placed several
nice field goals in the basket.
The P. C men were lithsome and fast.
Carolina exhibited a better passing game
than they showed in the Parris Island
Marine contest and were more accurate I
in shooting for the basket.J

Carolina Takes Lead in Opening
Half, But Duke Ahead in
Latter Period
Carolina suffe'red her first defeat of the
season last night when the Nicotines of
Duke University out-passed, and out
shot the Gamecock five. It was a beau
tifully played game. Thefinal score was
39 to 32.
The North Carolina aggregation dis
played a flawless passing attack, and
that, in the main was responsible for
their victory. A diminutive lad by the
iame of Councilor was the bell wether
of the Nicotine flock and his men passed
to him at every opportunity. Councilor
accounted for 13 of his team's points and
he was high man for the night.
The Gamecocks clung doggedly to the
lead during the greater part of the con
test. A Carolina goal was the first of
the game and a few seconds later Duke
matched it with another field basket.
Chandler took Clark's place and the
Greenville boy helped. Carolina to assume
l lead that seemed commanding at the
time. At the conclusion of the first half
the Gamecocks were in the van, 19 to 11.
Four and a half minutes after the sec
nd half began, Duke had tied the score
while Carolina had not registeled a sin
zle point. Chandler raced under the
basket and put Carolina ahead once more
while Windus added two more with a
field goal from a different angle. Hol
combe placed a foul in the wicker and
the count was 24 to 19.
That spurt was the climax for the
Rooster's activities. Werber, stocky and
tousi.ed haired Duke guard, shot a goal
from near the center of the court. In
quick succession Jankoski, Werber,
Councilor, fairly rolled an interminable
stream of goals in the basket, until the
score was near the forty mark.
Carolina was missing her shots. The
Duke men played safe and kept the
sphere in their opponents territory and
the Garnet and Black men -iad no al
ternative save to advance and grapple in
the center of the floor. This manuver
ing gave the Nicotines the opportunity
the sought and they passed under the
basket at will.
Near the ciose of the contest, the en
tire Duke second team came on the
floor. Clark. Windus an(d Fair scored
but it was too late to win.

Swamp Fox fencing clubi in Marion, and
was defeated 5 matches to 4.
The Swamp Foxes p)iled up a five
point lead and then the Biddies staged
a re'markab)le comeback led by Green oi
Columb)ia. The Swamp) Foxes never hadl
all their first team in and p)art of the
time the second team wvas all that wvas in.
Reese, all-southern collegiate and ama
ceur, did not enter b)ut was held in
readhiness in case the Swvamp Foxes got
nto trouble.
