Gibbes gave a force ful and interesting lecture on hypnotism in the chapel on Tuesday afternoon and delighted a large audience with a prac tical demonstration of his hypnotic powers, using six negroes as subjects. He sketched the history of hypno tism, although he stated its exact na. ture was not known. In the hypnotic state, the mind and mental action of the subject are under complete control of the operator; and the subject is sensi tive only to what the operator tells him he may be sensitive. The hypnotised person has no fears or inhibitions and does readily whatever the operator com mands. The subject is totally oblivious to all other people except the operator or to those the operator permits him to become aware of. Dr, Gibbes then proceeded to prove his statements with demonstrations upon the affable negroes. At his instant coin mand they fell asieep in their chairy,' wearing happy, somnolent expressions. He then placed a bottle in each negro's hand and told each to try to pull the corks out, at the same time telling them that they could not. At the given sig nal each negro began pulling with Her cuiean efforts but the corks refused to budge. He then allowed them to pull the corks out and told them they were drinking beer and the pre-Volstead gus to with which those negroes drank the imaginary beer made the audience hila rious. Dr. Gibbes then proved the power of the operator over the senses of 4he sub ject. Each negro was given a piece of apple and allowed to eat about half of it, then he was told it was quinine. Real quinine could not have provoked more spitting than foilowed. The negroes were then told they had pains in their stomachs and deep groans and gymnas tic antics followed this announcement. Tro alleviate their distress, the demon strator gave each a whole apple and told them to swallow it, that it was medicine. Trhe blacks followed this instruction with such success that many in the audience feared they wvould suffocate. The audience then experienced a thrill Given a golf club, a, negro was told to hit a golf bah1 as far as he could. Fac ing the audience, the negro took a wide swing but failed to touch the ball. The skeptics resumed their seats with a sigh of relief. Demonstrating the hypno tist's power over the sense of feeling, the negroes shivered when told how cold ther were and }viarmed $efore chairs which they believed were stoves. Dramas of the barber shop and ten cenit store, followed by letter reading hypnotism and demonstra:ions of post hypnotic power concluded the lecture, although at its close Dr. Gibbes was be sieged.by a large group of the audience, wvho were anxious to know the secret of his occult powers. Dr. Josiah Morse of the department of psychology and philosophy made the demonstration possible and is expected to give other public psychology lectures 'ITY OF SOUTH C Rumph, Edward 13 ryant, Rhettnan S; tichard Edgerton, W allace Prescott, Ja Bass I-Robert Jon es, Jack Oulla, Syl Metts, Robert Tom pkins, Erskine Le( Carolina Songsters Take Second Place Strain of Journey Tells on the Singing of University Glee Men Carolina took second place in the State Glee club contest held at Clem ion College last Friday night, Furman winning first place.
