NA TIONA T FRA T IS PETITIONED BY LOCAL CLUB Alumni Members of Fraternity Residing in Columbia Are Assisting MANY CHAPTERS OF PS.K. Hermes Club Has Retained Prac tically All of Its Member ship Intact The Hermes idiub pf the University of South Carolina has recently prepared and presented a petition to the Phi Sig ma Kap)a fraternity and members of the club are hoping for a favorable an swer fro mthe national association with in a short time. Alumni members of the fraternity residing in the City of Colum bia and students here at Carolina who are members of the group at other in stitutions are cooperating with the Her mes club in- an effort to bring a chapter here at an early date. The Hermes club feels particulariy honored in being permitted to petition Phi Sigma Kappa. The national fra ternity has chapters in all large colleges and universities throughout the United States and the forming of a chapter at Carolina will be a worthy addition t.) the national fraternities that have al ready located here. Although there is not a chapter of the fraternity in South Carolina, schools in hereby states have cha)ters and an effort is being made to have them cooperate with Hermes club in an effort to bring a chapter here. The Hermes club has not disbanded, as some of the other clubs have, and practically its entire membership has been preserved while many other clubs have disbanded due to the petitioning of fraternities. The club has recently tak en in three new men, Bert Karick, presi dent of the sophomore eiass, Willie Dent student assistant in the School of Engi neering, and Parker Davis. The club is maintaining a well fur nished club room on the third floor in Harper college, and has been doing so since the early part of last year. The club is running on a smooth basis and numbers amodg its members some of the most important men on the campus. Plans are being made to secure a house in the event that the thetition for a char ter to Phi Sigma Kappa is granted. Pajama-Clad Figure Doused with Water Complete dousing of a pajama-clad inmate of Woodrow college was the fitting climax to a water battle between men of third floor Burney and third floor of tenement 29, Woodrow, Mon day, November 28. Th6 affair came about thus: The roommates of a gentleman in Wood row hung his bed clothing and mattress out on the fire escape and these articles were immediately soakedl with water by the denizens of Burney. Then an en terprising Burneyite climied up the fire escape and unhooked the mattress, which fell with a loud thud to the ground. The owner of the mattress became enraged and inmmediately gave a brief summary of the ancestry and family tree of "anyone who would throw a fellow's mattress on the ground." Roommates of the victim finally concluded that the joke had gone too far and that they must unite against the common enemy. Burney. They em phasized their conclusion by heaving a glass of water into tenement 29. Bur ney retaliated by throwing several several glasses into their window. This interchange of moisture was kept up for a considerab)le time, and then came the finale. William Cuip, for it was none other than he, came out on the fire escape, clad in pajamas and waving a broom over his head with the seeming intention of hurling it into the ranks of the enemy. As he stood pois ed, broom held overhead, he seemed the last word in what the well-dressed sleeper will wear. During the dramatic pause which he had planned to allow between poising and ihrowing, a tin waste paper basket, half filled with water, was 'unceremoniously emptied on him and he was washed into hi. room. He was hastened dn his retreat by the yells of the victors, who concluded that he was all "wet."
