As a result of ti idea, the government of the campus s passed largely into the hands of the dents. .j At the annual meeting of the trustees 4 December, 11304, a set of by-laws was Idopted. 'llhe principle on which the iscipline of the new institution was founded is stated thus: "The rewards and punishments of this institution shall be all addressed to the sense of duty and the.principles of honor and shame." Dr. Jonathan Maxcy, then president of the college, was influential in, preppring the sections relating to discipline. The principle of honor that was the guiding principle in the home and in the affairs life was introduced into the life of the campus. The Students' Handbook for 1913 says that the honor system simply that "every man is accounted a gentleman until he proves himself not to be one, and every man's word is accepted as true, unless there is clear evidence that -it cannot' be so taken." In 1909, it was decided that the honor committee should consist of one student from efch academic class and one from each law class. The representatives were to have equal powers and one vote each. The chairman of the committee was to be the rdgresentative of the senior academic class. It is the duty of the committee, as well as of each student, to inquire into all the improprieties of conduct in the classroom and to report them. The committee hears testimony and finds the accused guilty or not guil ty. 'lThe accused is allowed to testify, select two students as his attorneys, and to appeal to the student body. , Tn the latter case, all the evidence is presented to the student body. Clubs from Clemson, Furman, Wofford, Presbyterian college and Er skine have already announced themselves as competitors for the cup. U:ider the South Carolina glee club association rules, each club sings two songs, the Prize song, selected by the association, and a choice song, selected by the individual club. T1he Prize song this year is 'The Broken Melody," by Jean Siberlius. The University's choice song is an early Motet, by Depres, a Flemish composer. Both numbers are to be' sung without accompaniment. James Fowler Cooper, academic senior from Kingstree, has been appointed to )direct the Carolina Club in the contest Mr. Cooper is an able violinist as well as vocalist and director. He is also art editor of the 1927 "Garnet and Black.' One of the chief aims of the Glee clul association is to develop student direc tors, and their leading of the clubs wil be watched more closely than ever this year. The winner of the state contest is tr compete in the Southern association mee' which inturn sends its successful club t, the national contest, held under the aus pices of the New York musical counci. of glee clubs. Membership in the Sou them ass6ciation has increased in the last year from eight to 32 clubs, and it is exIVeted that competition will be keen er than ever before. The Gamecock orchestra will be carried as a specialty attraction, and the club will present its usual number of concert songs, with several popular se lections to give a balanced program. During the 20 minutes of . vaude ville, which is an interesting feature of the University's program, the members of the club will display their talents in various lines. Fred Rumph and Sam Burts, the two comedians, who have taken the sobri quets "Midnight and Lowdown," will he the headliners in the more frivolous part of the program. Both have had expe rience in legitimate vaudeville. Their act will be an original black-face Ip.re sentation, with songs, snappy lines, and new and flashy costumes. The Glee club will make its first ap pearance at the 'lown Theater, Tuesday night.
