SOCIETIES WERE ONE TILL FEBRUARY 1806 Lowry Brothers, of Chester Toss Coin to Divide the Organization PHILOMATHIC OLD TITLE Names of Two Groups Now Ex isting Have Definite Meaning The Clarios-phic and Euphradian so cieties grew out of one, the Philomathic, the first organization on the campus. 'iThe division took place in February, 1806. when it became.apparent from the increasing student body that two small societies would be much better than one large body. Provisions for organizing two societies called for two persons from the same distrjct to divide the members. This duty was given to two brothers, James and Joseph Lowry, of Chester, who were working their way through college and who were held in high esteem by both faculty and student body. When the meeting was called for the division of the funds and members, the Lowrys "threw up heads and tails" for the first choice. In this way the members wer divided into the two societies now ex isting. On February 21, 1806, the Clarioso phic society adopted its name, taking it from the words "Clarius," God of eloquence, and "sophos," "wise." At this same meeting a badge was chosen: a band of blue ribbon on the arm be. tween the elbow and the wrist. The name "Euphradian" means "cor rectness of speech" or "eloquence." William Harper of Newber'ry, the first matriculate of the college, was the first president of this society. The badge adopted by the Euphra dians was different from that of the Clariosophic. It was a six-pointed gold star, with the 1FA6, the Greek letters Phi Alpha Ep!!,n and the motto, "Am icitiae Sacrum," engraved upon it. The original society held its meetings in the chapel and for several years af ter the sparation the two societies con tinued to hold their meetings there, at different times on Saturday. Finally they decided it better to have separate meeting places, so the Clariosophic moved to the room over the chapel where its meeting place remained un til it moved to the present location in LeGare College. The Euphradions moved from the chapel to the upper flogr of DeSaussure and twenty-eight years later to Harper College. Diplomas, written in Latin, were adopted early and are still bestowed on graduates at the annual commencement celebration of the two societies. U-C- - Thornwell College Adopts Little Kitten Several students of the University have given considerable thought to a probicar s. .' fronting them latel y, i.e., "how to be mother to a cat," or perhaps, it should be called kitten. One evening this wveek there was con siderable commotion in Thomnwell col lege. Students hurried to a certain room in one of the tenements talking excitedly. It was found that two of the boys, re turning from an evening spent in Shan don, heard a cry of distress which ap peared to come from a neighboring tree. Being curious, they investigated and dis covered a small black and white kitten in the tree. After a little persuasion, the'kitten was prevailed upon to descend and make friends. The boys, knowing that the kltterw was homeless, appropriat ed it and brought it with them to the campus. Now, every evening someone can be seen taking the kitten to the shower with soap and towel to make its toilet. Num erous d:ips are made to town for the purpose of purchasing milk, meat and anything else that the kitten desires in the way of edibles. Fortunately, the kitten Is hot discriminating in its cul inary tastes. 'llhere has been some discussion as to the name for the feline. Some suggest Frances at*d others insist on Francisi They do not want to impede the kitten in its life wor:k by giving it a name that it can not lie up to Tenement 29 Holds Lead in B.D.G. Race Tenement 29 continues to hold the lead in the Bible discussion groups, with tenement 13 coming second,- as was shown in the percentage figures last week. These figures are based on the number present, the number of visitors, and the size of the group. The 'per centage is figured in such a way that the small group will have the same chance of winning as the large one.
