Gamecocks Drop Final Dual
Meet of Season to Furman
Conder Flashes
BY MARGIN OF 20 POINTS
Heavy Rain Does Not Hold Con
testants From Beginning the
Meet-Runs Are Fast
A hard rain which began 15 minutes
before the scheduled time of the meet,
failed to deter the Furman and Caro
lina track squads from staging a fast
and relatively close contest last Satur
day. The Hornets triumphed by a
score of 73 to 53. It was the final dual
meet of the year for both teams.
Furman grabbed an eight point lead
at the first crack of the gun when
"Fuchy" Gibson broke the tape in the
century dash with Lawton, his team
mate trailing a yard behind. Ruben
stein placed a good third.
The Gamecocks fared a little better
fin the mile. The two Furman iunners
took an early lead. On the third lap
Vincent spurted 15 yards ahead of the
field. Captain Marion Boyce nad!,- a
gallant effort to overtake him but his
fine finishing sprint found hia four
yards short of the mark.
Tom Magill heaved the iron shot 41
feet, 11 inches for Carolinas initial
first place. The Hurricane strong men
took second and third. Southern, of
Furman, won the javelin with Griffin
hurling the shaft for second p!ace.
"Slim" Carson, though not coming up
to his usual form in the discui throw,
had small difficulty in copping the five
point place.
The high hurdle race was good. Bob
Thomas leading Bagwell to the tipe by
a couple of yards. In the scramble ovet
the lower sticks, the Carolina -star
crossed the line in the wake of Wood,
Furman hurdler. He was relevated to
third place when Lawton, running
against time, bettered the performance
of Wood.
Gene Keels battled the Hornet dis
tance man on even terms for seven
laps in the two mile event, and on the
final quarter mile stretch, sprinted the
entire distance and loped in an easy
winner. "Yonkers" Silberman came
close behind Carrison for third place
The quarter mile was a desperate
battle between Floyd Thomas and
Morgan of Furman. Thomas caught
the pole and held until the straight-a
ivay sprint. The Furman man crossed
the line three yards to the good. In the
220, the Furman sprinters reversed
their manner of placing, Lawton win
n'ng, and Gibson taking second.
Dave Rembert dlisplayedl perfect formi
on the high jump, clearing the bar at
five-ten. Shand tied for secondl with
Blea'sley of Furman. Jones of Furman
gave Power Rogers his first defeat of
the year when he won the pole vault
at 11 feet 9 inches. Bud Baker took
first place in the broad jump, Beasley
getting second. The relay wvent to the
visitors.

kelstein, Holler, Foster, Hildebrand
e Funderburke and Griffin.
This will be the last fencing event o
e the year. Carolina fencers have mad
y an excellent record this year at hom
c and abroad. This was made 1pssiSl
e mainly by the excelent coaching o
Professor Stephan. Professor Stephai
has had experience in France and ha
worked with the best college coaches o
the north. The superiority of his systen
was especially emphasized at the N. C
meen.
Those who are interested in becominf
a participant in the tournament are re

TRACK SQUAD
GOES TO P.C.
FOR BIG MEET
State Track Teams to Compete
in Open Invitation Collegi.
r ates at Clinton Saturday
LARGE SQUAD TO BE TAKEN
McFadden's "Knights of Cinder
Lanes" to End Up Season
Tomorrow
With a long. hard season behind
them, McFadden's tracksters left this
afternoon for Clinton where they will
enter the state meet, which is the final
competition of the season. Twenty
four men were taken.
The Gamecocks hope to place hign
- in the meet. The showing against
Furman was not at all disappointing.
>The Birds are strongest in the field
events. Magill is slated to have an easy
time in the shot put. The Heath
Heath Springs boy has not been beaten
this year and his throw of 40 feet 11
inches is the best that has been o..cial
ly registered by any state contender.
Magill has thrown the shot further
than forty-one feet on previous oc
casions. "Slim" Carson is preparing to
sling the discus over 125 feet and ought
to win on it.
Rembert has an excellent chance of
at least placing in the high jump. Shand
is improving lately too. Power Rog
ers has stiff competition in the pole
valt.
Thomas in the quarter, and Boyce in
the mile are sure placers. The two
mile offers to be the sterling event of
the whole meet. Cannon, stellar Cleni
son runner, was last year's champion
and is probably doped to win. But
Keels turned in a 10:35 race against
Furman and it looks as if the Purple
and( Gold runner will have to (o some
stepping to repeat.
Carolina came across with four runs
in the fifth to put the gaie oln ice, and
addel another for luck in the seventh.
