Dr. Burton Clark is getting out a
series of Atlases or notebook maps and
corresponding wall maps of the world
to show by autosuggestive colors, sym
bols, and abbreviations, all of the nat
ural conditions of the different major
and minor regions of the world. These
include such conditions as physiogra
phic boundaries, temperature ranges,
easonal rainfall, humidity or evapora
tion steam gradients, etc. In other
words, all the fundamental factors that
determine the heterogeneity of the
economic and resulting social, political,
and cultural conditions throughout the
world.
The purpose of preparing this series
of maps is to facilitate the direct com
parison of these different factors with
in any one region, or between regions
by eliminating the disconcerting dif
ficulties of varying types of maps, and
of different scales and methods of
symbolization. Methods of symboliza
tion so far seen to have been devised
to conceal rather than to elucidate the
facts, for it is rare to find a map from
which information can be secured
without repeated reference to the leg
end which more or less explains the
meanings of the different colors and
symbols.
It has been Dr. Clark's experience
that more of his time is spent in in
structing the students as to the mean
ing of the maps than in explaining the
actual differences in the regions which
they are intended to portray.
He has also been preparing,to go
with these mays, a rotating diagram of
the earth, showing in all three sections
the total amount of heat and light re
ceived by any square degree of the
earth's surface at any hour of the day,
for any clay of the year, and for any
longitude and latitude, including the
angle at which the rays strike any
slope of the ground and the amount of
heat lost in passing through the corres
ponding angular distances throught the
atmosphere, and the resulting refrac
tion or bending of these rays.
Apparently, for the first time, stu
dents will be able to make definite, ex
act measurements of the differences in
heating of different parts of the earth,
even to a decimal of one per cent.
Dr. Clark is being assisted in his
work by Mr. W. B. Caughman.
