C. Doggett. Dogget states that all those who wish to orde invitations must give him their ordt on or before April 16. The invitatiotis this year are being ex ecuted by the Charles H. Ehiott Coin pany, of North Philadelphia, Pa. Thi company requires that all orders be seat in six weeks in advance so that the might have ample time to prepare then" There will be two kinds of itivitations leather and cardboard. Tyler to Represent Carolina in Contest President of Clariosophic Societ3 Goes to State Oratorical in Rock Hill Guy Tyler of Norway. seiior. and president of the Clariosophic literaY society, with his oration "Dreatner ot Dreams," won the right to repii,sent the University in the State Intercol legiate oratorical Contest to be hel at Rock Hill, April 15th. Tyler has a very creditable record in forensic activities. In his sophliniore year, he won the Clariosophic '.b iter's medal. Last year lie was on the llig Triangle team with Florida and Tenit essee. He also won the Roddev de bater's medal, as well as the right to represent Carolna in the State oratori cal contest. This year he was again . member of the Big Triangle debating team and debated also against Buck nell. FRIGIDARE CORP. s GIVES MACHINE TO GEOLOGISTS Refrigerator Especially Adapted for Experimental Purposes -Now in LeConte ELIMINATES DIFFICULTIES Automatic Temperature Control Will Help Dr. Taber in His r Soil Experiments The ldepartment of geology of the University of South Carolina has re cently received from the manufacturers, t the Frigidare corporation, atv electric refrigerator for the promotion of certain experiments undertaken in the depart miont some time ago. The machine, which is especially equipped for experimental purposes, was recentlv installed in Le Conte College. The gift was made to enable Dr. Ste phen Taher. state geologist and head of the department of geology at the Uni versitv, to continue experiments i4n the freezing of soils which Dr. Taber has beiei conducting for some time. The investigation has heretofore -been at ten(led with great difficulties, however, because of the lack of apparatus to effect artificial freezing. Natural freezing. Dr. Taber states, was imsatisfactory be cause of the mildness and variability of the climate in this section and because the operator had no means of controlling the coilditions of the freeze. The new machine is equipped with nI automatic temperature control and other devices. Dr. Taber's investigation of the phenomena of soil freezing is ex pected to lead to important engineering results. since it involves the cracking aid heaving of paveints and other coin crete work which. in more Northern climates. is a source of incessant trouble and great economic loss. It is not the ni form expansioin which accompanies freezing that is destructive, Dr. Taber asserts, but the (lifferential or irregular elevation. which to a large degree is dv termined by the texture of the soil af fected. The results of the compieted investigation, it is believed. can. he util ized to prevent or greatly reduce the (lestructive effects of freezing, and the electric machine will make possible a minute checking and re-checking of ex teriments already made under condi tiolns less favorable. Owl, Pykamid, and German Clubs Give Dances-Music by Old Dominions Three dances will be given at Easter this year by the different social clubs on the campus. On April 21st, the Pyra mid club will entertain with a night darce in the University gymnasium. The Owl club, on the afternoon of the next . (lay, will give a tea daice at the Ridge wood country club. This dance wil be followed by another night dance that will be given by the German club in the Utiversity gymnasiu.n. The (lances will be given at Easter year are always looked forward to by the students and their guests and are coisdered by them to be some of the most enjoyable affairs that the social clu!s function. The Old Dominion orchestra from Virginia has been secured to render the nusic. This orchestra is Ifecognized throui4hoit Virginia and adjoiing states - as one of the most popplar dance or ehestras in the South. Enthusiasts may aticipate the iatest in jazz. The orchestra will remain in Colum bia ffir two days and it is possible that s(ome other club on the campus will at range to seclre their services for a tea da-.ce on the afternoon of the 21st.
