March, a special campaign was put
on in order to raise sufficient funls c
for the erection of a memorial at
the entrance to the football field in
honor of Dr. William Davis Mel

time the students at Carolina did s<

There is a man in your tenement

will give. Do not wait for him to
look you up, go to see him.
It must be remembered by those
who are first year men and who

While Mass of Students

Only 200 of the 1,500 students regi

lina have contributed to the Melton
memorial fund, the closing day of the
drive has been extended from today
until April 7. giving students one week
longer to a'd in the most glorious pro
ject the student body of the Univer
sity of South Carolina has ever under
taken.
The campus literary societies, social
clubs, and other organizations, have
contributed to the fund. Even the
I janitors and other employees of the
I Univers'ty have taken part in the drive
i but the students themselves have not
(lone thPir part inl making the purposed
memorial a reality.
Campus students have responded
better than town students. Practically
the entire 400 who have given to the
memorial fund are students who room
on the campus. Students who live in
Columb'a are urged to take notice of
this fact by making their contribution
at once. l,very student was asked by
the Social Cabinet, sponsors of the
memorial gate, to contribute at least
one dollar to the fund. The average
contribution of the 200 students who
have contributed is eighty cents.
The Melton memorial gate will be
erected between the two ticket booths
on Green street and will be built of
limestone and brick-provided the stu
dents do their share and give to the
fund. It will cost $1,700 to erect the
gate. inestone urns will be placed on
the two large columns on each side of
the gate and limestone tablets, bearing
a suitable inscription, will be placed on
each column.
The faculty has (lone its share. F,very
janitor has been given the opportunity
to contribute to the menior'al and
many of them have responded, several
without being solicited. Students have
been given a chance to contribute to
the memorial fund andl because so fewv
usedl the opportunity the date for the
closing of the dIrive has beeni extendled
for one week. lEvery studlent has the
opportun1ity' to contribute to the Mel
ton memor'al. livery student is urgedl
to use this opportunity before it is too
late. No dlonations from anyone not
connec'tedl with the University are be
ing accep)tedl. This will he strictly a
Carolina project, madle poss'ble by
money freely given by the studlents of
the University of South Carolina . It is
a plan, a dIream at present. Hellp make
the Melton memorial a reality by con
tributing at least one (dollar to the Mel
ton memorial fund.
