Dr. Kennedy Gives Whole Build
ing to Prexy-Outline
of Plans
"The Legislature has given me $20,
000 to build a home," said Dr. Douglas,
in chapel yesterday, "but I have decid
ed not to build a home and to turn the
money over to Mr. Bell for the erection
of a modern and up to date ping-pong
table on the front porch of Flinn Hall."
A great silence fell over the assem
blage while a qu'et-looking elderly
gentleman sitting well in the rear of
the 'uilding arose to his feet. Tears
swelled up into his eyes and there was
a quaver in his voice as he spoke.
"In view of your magnanimous offer
I think it only right that I put the Lib
rary building at your disposal to be
used as a home." It was Dr. R. M. Ken
nedy speaking.
Great cheers and loud applause
greeted this announcement and when
the noise settled down, Dr. Douglas ha.1
accepted the librarian's offer.
Remodeling of the building will be
gin at once, said Dr. Douglas, when
questioned as to what changes would
be made before he moved his family in
to the historic old structure.
"I am going to have the partitions of
the first floor torn down and a new
hardwood floor put down. This will be
used for a series of parties that I ant
planning to pull for the students. Of
course there will be small rooms all
around the edges of the building and I
hope the students that attend these
parties will find some use to put them
to. A small platform will be built at
one end and the orchestra will be seat
ed there while playing for the dances.
"On the second floor, I shall build a
sun-parlor for Mrs. Douglas and my
two daughters. I plan to have my den
and smoking-room here also. There
will be two small parlors here where
my daughters will entertain their getn
tlemen friends, in addition to a smok
ing room. This last named will always
be stocked with cigars and cigarettes 4
and it is hoped that the boys and girls
on the campus will take advantage of
this. a
"The two wings that are.now under
construction will house the sleeping
and eating quarters and I an planning
to ask the leg'slature for more money
to erect a large kitchen directly in the
rear of the building. I will keep a
group of cooks always on the job so
that the students will be able to ap
pease their appetites at any hour. No
charge will be nmade for this slight in
cotvenence, but I will expect those
who take advantage of this to supply
their own eating utensils, as silver is
h)ardl to find these (lays.'
As a means of cutting the cost of re
modeling the building the professors on
the camp)us have volunteeredl their ser'
vices int a(ding D)r. Douglas to make t he
prop)osedl changes himself. The work
will prob)ably be finished withini a few
(lays.
"I hereby extend a cordlial invitation
to all students of the University of
South Carol'na to use my new home as
if it were their brother's." said Drm.
Douglas, "they will be welcome at all
times andl I sincerely hope that my
home will soon beconme a necessary
factor in the life of the under-graduat.

"A draft wili give one a cold," says
Cecil Floyd, after returning from a date
in Shandon, minus the seat of his trou
sers as the result of a collision with a
bulldog.
According to Floyd, the dog met him
at the sidewalk with the determination
not to let him enter the house. He tried
in vain to walk around the quadruped,
who, seeing his intention, nmaneuvered
around and made a rear attack, caught
the seat of his trousers and held firmly
on. Floyd began fighting and yelling,
and soont attracted the attentionk of the
people of the house, who recognized his
familiar yodel and came to the rescue.
When the rescuing party finally ar
rived the (log was gone and so was
the seat of Floyd's trousers. The peo
ple naturally wanted to know the cause
of ad the wioise. so Floyd, while holding
his hat firmly over the detiuded spot,
answered diplomatically. "I was just
giving the Washington monument an
egg shampoo."
Appearances seemed to indicate that
Cecil was accustomed to wearing his hat
an the seat of his trousers, he kept it
tiere while standing and had it in posi
ion for adjusting while seated. How
ever. walking without undue exposure
,eemed to present the chief difficulty for
Floyd. Going toward a person was
if course easy, but coming away called
or many backward steps and much hold
ng of the hat.
The yotmig lady, who was the object
f Floyd's call, insisted that they dance
mt Floyd said that it was impossible
or hinm to dance on th:s "weak-end."
Floyd has planned to thwart all at
acks from (logs in the future by wear
ng a pair of silecially co\nstructed trou
ers with cork in the seat and fish hooks
nbedded therein. He is willing to plav
air however. As the owner of the
log has placed a sign in front of the
louse reading. "Reware the Dog."
