White Lectures to
Electrical Students

Harry C. White, general supervisor
of the Edison Lamp Works, a subsidia
ry of General Electril Co., spoke to the
school of electrical engineering Mon
day on the subject of "The develop
ment of artificial lighting." He traced
lighting froni its beginning to the lat
est development of General Electric.
Among other things he showed lamps
dating as far back as 600 13. C., a du
plicate of Edison's first incandescent
bulb; the largest bulb in the world, 125,
000 candle power; the smallest in the
world; and the latest type of bulb, a
gas-filling non-filament lanmp whic.1
burns a year at the cost of 3 cents.
Mr. White told of Edison's life and
the life of Charles T. Steinmetz. Mr.
White will be followed by a man to
sign up members of the graduating
class in the school of engineering for
General Electric.
The lecture by Mr. White is one of
a series which Prof. T. F. Ball is bring
ing this term.
Hypatians Discuss
University History
The history of the University of
South Carolina was discussed at the
Hypatian literary society held in tthe
Clariosophic hall, Wednesday after
noon.
Miss Ethel Burress told of the found
ing and opening of the University and
Miss Irene Hall told of the University
from 1860 to 1876.
After the meeting a social hour was
enjoyed. Chicken salad sandwiches
and punch was served.

Five states, Arizona, Oregon, Rhode
Island, Texas and Wisconsin have one

Co-ed Literary Society Votes- to
Give $25 to Melton
Memorial
"What lyric is to poetry, the informal
essay is to prose," said Dr. Smith in a
talk on the informal essay before the
Euphrosynean literary society, Wed
nesday afternoon in the Euphradian
hall.
Dr. Smith also emphasized the im
portance of expressing one's own feel
ings and experiences, when writing the
informal essay.
The society voted to give $25.00 to
the Melton Memorial.
