JUNIOR CO-EDS WIN ATHLETIC MEET AT GYM Team Scores 534 Points to Defeat Freshman and Sopho more Groups TWO HUNDRED TAKE PART Mat Tumbling, Eskimo Roll, Bear Walk and Dances on Program Jhe juniors of the co-ed athletic as sosiat'on won the indoor athletic meet Thursday afternoon was held in th-2 University gymnasium. The freshmen made 457 points, the sophomores 501, and the juniors 534. Two hundred co-eds participated in the meet. Each class wore its colors. The freshmen wearing yellow, the sophomores wearing blue while the juniors carried a band of purple on their arms. The co-eds opened the contest by a march, coming into the gymnasium single file and then forming in rows of eight and marching toward the en trance. The marched in 17 lines, keep ing time to the swing of the music. The contestants were in three distinct groups, the yellows, the blues and the purples. Miss Smith, co-ed athletic director, gave the orders that the competing teams carried out. The first order of the (lay was a group of calisthenics. These were the jumping jacks, inhal ing and exhaling, side jump and others. Next on the program were some stunts protraying negro plantation life, this was composed of dancing in all of its various forms. After a few minutes of rest, the cali sthenics were resumed. These were more strenuous than the preceding ones and many a damsel was seen to wither under the grueling grind. These included mat tumbling and jumping stick. In this last mentioned exercise, the girl participating held a stick in her hands and endeavored to hop over-the stick both forwards and backwards. This was not an easy feat, and several co-eds defied the law of gravitation and fell with a resounding thud to the mat. Other parts of the meet included the 1-skimo roll,, the bear walk, the cour age walk, prel'ninary race fall, anl many others. One of the exercises that afforded much amusement to the spectators was the ocean roll. In this exercise the co-eds arranged themselves in two row-; facing each other and grasping their arms, threw their victims into the air as she passed (lown the line. The relay race was the last past of the meet. In th's stunt there were two teams composed of five members. Thev rested upon their hands anl heels and 1utished themselves toward the goal. Miss Anne Truiesdale was the Spark Plug of the race, as she covered the dlistance in record time. The freshmen were thle b)est sports of the meet as they cheered time and again for their 01jopoents as wecll as for themselves, p)erhlaps thlis was a bit of polIcy on their part. Many spectators witnessed the events of the afternoon and were generous m their applause. Messers. Hodges, of the L.,tw school; Stephan, of the University; and Miss Felie Clark were the judges of the meet. Mr. H-odges presensted the vic toriotus juniors with a silver loving cup, their prize for winning the contest. Miss Johnson accep)ted the cup for the juniors. Trhis meet marked the end of tIle in door season. Spring sports begin Monlday, these include baseball, track atnd tennis. Douglas Will Speak at Charleston Meet Sunday afternoon Dr. Douglas will speak in Charleston in the evangelistic meeting which is being promoted there by the Y.M.C.A. and the Laymen's Brotherhood. He will also fill the pul pit of the Second Presbyterian chturch in that city during the absence of the regular pastor, Dr. Hickman. The subject was Resolved: That the, Primary System of Educations should be Abolished. The affirmative for Carolina compos ed of A. R. Godshall, of Union, and T. R. Finley, of Laurens, won a unani mous decision over the negative from the Citadel, composed of Al Deschamps and Lionel Stukes, contest being held at Clinton. The negative composed of J,:. Karesh and W. 1). Simpson, both of Columbia, also won a unanimous deci s.on over the Presbyterian College at Charleston, consisting of Preston Drake and S. C. Ligon.
