UNIFORMS ARE HANDED OUT TO BASEBALL MEN Bill Rogers Temporarily Off the Practice Field Because of Shoulder Injury CHANDLER PARKS ONE Not Many Men Out for Team Hot Battle for Third-Base Position The second week of baseball prac tice closes uneventfully. Bill Rogers attenpted a "shoulder dive" into the turf of right field and while chasing a fly and the resulting injury to his shoulder was sufficient to keep him away from the field for two or three days. He returned Wednesday after noon and limbered up the "sore wing." Uniforms have been issued. Not more than twenty or thirty men are out, including pitchers, and there are almost enough of the grey-colored "C" crester diamond outfits to go around to the whole crew. The scrubs pulled one over on the regulars Saturday when they trounced them 8 to 4. Rich was in the box for the winners, and he did some mighty nifty twirling. Stoddard also upheld his standards well, even though his team lost. Chandler crowned one of Rich's "teasers" over the left field wire fence in the sixth inning. "Mike" Windus also made a four bagger, this hit bouncing over after striking thc cinder track. Much interest is centered about the battle for third base. Gross has been playing short lately and Nolan and Sam Burke alternating for the hot cor ner. -U.s.c. This ;s the first of sev eral preliminary local matches before the team begins it inter-collegiate matches which begin April Ist. About four local meets, ten inter collegiate meets, the state inter-colleg iate tournament, and probably the Southern conference tournament will be the schedule of the Gamecocks this year. The team promises to be as strong or maybe stronger even than last year. Coleman is captain and rank ing number one player. Heinie Fair ranks number two and showing much inproved form. Beattie holds third place and is playing a steady game. Boyd is nowv ranking fourth, but is closely pushed by Cain, number five. Other men still out are Ready, Coker, Ramsden, Bell; Averbuck and Ketchin. The ranking tournament that has been goin on for about six weeks will end tomorrow and all except eight men will be dropped from the squad. Ridgewood club has a strong team. Among those on it are Smith and Teeples of the University faculty, and Roddey, Columbia banker. A second meet will probably be held within the next two weeks. The Presbyterian Seminary team plays the Carolina men on the Carolina courts at 2 :30 p. mn. Tluesdlay. A team from the University faculty will also be played before the regular season begins. 'rwo trips will be made during the season by the racqjueteers. The first goes to the upper state to meet Wof ford andl Furnan. The second trip wil! be into Georgia, meeting Georgia Tech andl one other school not yet named. The return will be by Clemson to meet the Jungaleers. In May the team will journey to the City by the Sea for the state tournament. If the showing made by the team is satisfactory, Carolina may he represented at the Southern Conference meet at Chapel Hill. FRESH BASEBALL TO START Stoney has called the first "rat" diamond practice for tomorrow at ternoon at four o'clock. All aspirants for the team will re port at the playing field. No uni forms are to be given to players yet and those who intend to try out T will have to haul out some "old duds" of their own. TENEMENT 20 HEADS LIST OF CAMPUS FIVES Tenement 25 Quintet Is Ruled Out of Basketball Tourney B --Undefeated Team Tenement basketball still holds sway on the campus courts. Interest is high despite the fast that several teams have dropped out. All games that tenement 25 had won were wiped off the ledger, when thev B were ruled out on account of having one eligible man on their quintet. They can still still remain in the race, minus the ineligible man. They had not lost a game up until the time of the com mittees ruling. The team from tenement 20 is the only five on the campus with an un blemished record. The beat tenement 1 Wednesday, 7 to 6. It was the clos- TI est match of the tournament so far. STREETS Heinie Fair to Lead 1928 Cage Machine Columbia Boy Chosen Captain of Next Year's Gamecock Team at Forest Lake Dinner Herndon "Heinie" Fair, of Columbia, was elected to captain the 1928 Game cock basketball team at a banquet to the team held Monday night at the Forest Lake club. The Athletic As sociation gave the dinner. For two years Fair has been a star forward on the varsity. In the South ern tournament held in Atlanta he was picked on several all-southern teams. He was the individual high scorer of the Carolina five during the regular season. Before coming to the University, he played for the Episco cal High school in Virginia. Dick Josey, also of Columbia, was chosen to manage next year's team. He succeeds Bob Dew. Present at the dinner were the mem bers of the advisory board, Dr. D. M. Douglas, N. H. Edmunds, Bruce Cole man, Dr. N. B. Heyward, Dr. R. K. Foster, Dr. W. A. Boyd, and James G. Driver. The letter men of the 192 squad who attended were: Captain "Si" Seid eman, Rogers. That's what we thing of "Heinie" Fair's election as captain of the '28 basketball team. It is entirely ap propriate that a man who has played regularly for two years and who was selected as an all-south ern forward, should be chosen for the place. * * * ASKETBALL HAS almost finished its 1927 regime. Intra-mural com petition will continue for a week or two longer. The high school title games were played last week and they are usually the last of the year. * * * kSEBALL DEVOTEES are wending their way to the University field now in greater numbers. There are to be no regular games for a couple of weeks yet, but the regu la-s and the scrubs have it out every day and the workouts are in teresting to watch. * * * ME TRIALS were held by the track men Saturday. More are to be held tomorrow. The first tryouts were not "record breaking," but that is to be expected this time af the year.
