TEAM NOW LOOKING GOOD
Godshall, Scott, Stoddard, Saun

Pitching Bets
Bill Rogers called the first baseball
practice last Saturday afternoon. All
elig'ble old men are out and there the
several good prospects from last year's
freshman ranks.
Wednesday had originally been nam
ed as the opening day, but cold weather
would not permit and the date was set
for later.
Bocock has the making's of a good,
reliable nine. The pitching staff Is
relat'vely strong. "Lefty" Goodshall,
Scott, Stoddard, Saunders, and Reaves
will bear the brunt of the hurling. God
sfiall broke into the limelight as a
freshman (luring the 1925 season, when
substituting as a varsity pitcher in a
game w'th the Columbia Comers. The
varsity pitchers had been pounded to
pieces. The Union boy entered the fra
cas before the seventh inning was up
and held the professionals hitless for
the remainder of the game. He dupli
cated this feat in a second contest with
the same team. Last year lie was the
mainstay of the varsity twirling staff.
Scott and Reaves are both veteran
hurlers with fine records. Stoddard and
Saunders were on the freshman team
last season. There are other ien of
promise, who are out as pitchers.
Right riow it is pretty much of an
enigma as to who wIll do the catching
Guy Tyler and Red Swink will fight it
out, and possibly will alternate during
the season. There are two outstand
in candidates for the honor of playing
the in'tial sack. It is Bill Rogers', reg
ular hangout, but it may be that Bill
is to be shifted to one of the outer
gardens, and that Mike Windus will be
alloted the first base position.
The whole infield seems to be func
Coning well. Billy Lamar will likely
get the call tt the keystone bag, Nolan
and Saim Burke on short, and "Jay"
Gross or Bob Wimberly in the torrid
corner.
Jim Farr is almost certain to get the
call for one of the outfield places. At
this writing it seems likely that Farr
will take left field. Chandler the cen
ter garden, and Rogers will play right
field. Sally is bound to come in some
where however, as are Shelton and Mc
.lrath.

even up things slightly when the
time comes.

The freshman track team has suf
fered the loss of two fine athletes since
the end of the first term. Both these
men were members of the - Pickens
high school team last year.
"Hi-Pocket" Adams is one of the
men. He was one of the best middle
distance runners in South Carol'na
high school circles. The other man is
Garret, who was high point scorer in
the state school meet of 1925.

Coach Bocock had the boys play a
little practice game Tuesday afternoon.
The pitchers were being tapped rather
frequently as they had orders not to
".put anything on the ball."
Someone hit a fly to short right field.
Bill Rogers and Billy 1.amar ran wildly
after it and were in eiminent danger
of coll'ding.
"It's Bill's ball!" many of the players
yelled. The ball dropped harmlessly
to the ground without heing touched.
The coach entered a caustic con
Imlented. "Both of those fellows ar.
named Bill." The men looked sheep
ish. But "Mike" Windus saved them,
this very satisfactory retort.
