JOINT SESSION OF TWO MEN'S SOCIETIES HELL Several Matters of Importancq Brought Up at Meeting Last Tuesday LASTS UNTIL MIDNIGHT Presiding Officers for Debate4 Elected--Award of Letters Discussed To settle several matters of impor tance the Euphradian and Clariosophi< societies met in joint session Tutesda3 night. The session began at 9 o'clocl and lasted imtil almost midnight. 'The first business to be dispenseq with was the election of a presidint officer and a chief marshall for thi State oratorical. treliminaries to be hel March 18th. Raymond Hildebrand Eituphradian, was chosen presiding of ficer and Jasper Derrick chief mar shal. Next came the selection of ; presidinlg officer and chief marshal fo the dual debate with Bucknell on thi 24th of March. Doctor Douglas wil be asked to serve as presiding officer while Lonnie Garvin will serve as chic marshall. Burton F. Shook, Euphra dian, was elected presiding officer fo the Little Triangle Debate in chape Monday night, and Harold Hentz chic marshal. After these .elections were complete< the mat of *tle action of the De b,'..-g comcil taken east week on th, awarding of Block "C"'s was discussed Much opposition was brought forth 1< the plan of the Debating council to giv onIv one "C". regardless of the numbe: of debates won, with a star for eacl additional debate. Voicing their ob jections to the plan of the Debatin; council were chiefly, Guy Tyler, W. D Simpson, Donald Russell. Burtot Shook, Thomas Wofford. A. Ra, Godshall, and Joseph Karesh. Support ing the action of the Debating counci were Thomas Craig. Cecil Wittkovsk\ Cecil Scott. and 0. L.. Warr. Manl discussed the matter from an uninter ested point of view. Chief .nong thos, who spoke but who took no activ, stand, were Cecil Scott and Ravmom Hildebrand. The joint session, after listening t< the arguments of both sides. by accla imation, went oin record as opposing th, action taken by the Debating councl and appointed a committee composel of W. D. A committee of five members of the junior class was ap pointed a few (lays ago to arrange de finitely for two (lances at the gym in order to help defray the expenses of the final affair. They will probably be Saturday nights, April 2nd and 16th. Juniors are urged to advertise these (lances by telling their friends, both in town and out. an(d make this the most successful Junior-Senor that has ever been held at the University of South 'Carolina; thereby setting a good ex ample for the years that will follow. It is the duty of every junior to be a com mittee of one to see to it that no such thing as failure he experienced. Strong Writes Poetry at Library Furman Alumnus Presents the University with Volume of His Poems Julian1 H. Strong. ai alumnu.s of Fur man University-, has recently conMpleted a book of poems entitled *Glittering Gems." Mr. Strong has heen at work n the University librarv for some time anld on the completion of his book, he has presented a copy to the library. Mr. Strngi h:vi dedicated his book to Furman University where he was edu catedi. The poems that make up the sixty-four pages of this small volume are of varied subjects. as: To a Flapper.
