GAMECOCK FI' VICTORY OV Lew White Shoots First Three Field Goals of Game with North Carolina State FINAL SCORE IS 32 TO 26 Wolfpack Is Humbled in Close Game--Birds Go to the Second Round Cautiously rated a:, "dark horses of promise" The Gamecocks of South C'arolina capulated over North Carolina State in the first round of the Atlanta tournament. and utterly dumfounded the sporting critics to trample "Tiny" Hearn and his Yellow Jackets com pletely in the dust and reached the semi-finals of the Southern Conference championships. With only four teams left in the run ning, Carolina drew Vanderbilt, the five which was destined to win the chain pionship for the semi-final game. Stuart, the darkhaired Commodor! center, broke loose in the last half and the Birds were beaten in the closing moments, 31 to 25. The Wolfpack Topples The big Atlanta auditorium was only three-quarters filled. The tournament opened at 2:30, and Vanderbilt elimi nated Washington and Lee, the only conference quintet which had the punch to wollop South Carolina during tht regular season. The Gamecocks came in for a good natured "razzing" before the beginning of the contest. The Cracker city fans did not regard the conference leaders as a serious threat. The Wolfpack was favorite to win, Cries of "McDow ell, McDowell" went up. The North Carolina forward (he of football fame), was considered one of the fastest men in the tournament. But McDowell nor any of the N. C. players were able to do any real shoot ing during the first part of the game. Lew Wli*te insisted on getting hold of the ball entirely too much for their comfort. Two fouls gave the North Staters the jump-off. But what of that. White dropped three field goals in suc cession through the wicker and another foul point went to N. C. to make the score 6 to 3. Both teams played the sphere aim lessly. Several minutes passed before "Hienie" Fair dropped in a fine shot from the far r'ght hand corner, and Jack McDowell followed it quickly for his team's first field goal. White, who had been playing the best ball of any of the South Carolina men, was yanked. and Jim Farr took his place. He immediately changed the score to 11 to 6 and then made a foul for an extra point, Clark added another. North Carolina rallied toward the end of the half and lessened the margin by two field goals. The score boy. h'gh in the balcony, had 14 points to the' con - ference leaders and 10 for the \Volf pack. Its complete iess made it greater than ever Tech was undebatably trouiAced. The final score was 32 to 18. How quickly public opinion changed! The Gamecocks, rated as "dark horses", in a single night became the favorites. "Tiny" Hearn, the six feet seven center of the Technen, who was expected to cast goals at will while the "pigmy" South Carolinians looked placidly on, was nailed -on a dime." After taking three times as many shots as any man. on either team, lie did manage to drop in eight points, and two of these were fouls! To Seidemian goes the 'credit and the glory of stopping Hearn. The big man had registered 23 points in the Mississippi game on the preceding (lay. and the comparatively "short" Carolina players stopped him. The Gamecock captaih guarded him magnificently. CLASS GAMES WILL FOLLOW GIRL'S LEAGUE INDOOR MEET SOON Practice Held at Melton Hall for Basketball Games Next Week City league girl's basketball ended last night and class games will begin next week. Much interest has been taken as this is the first year that Ca rolina has had class teams in basketball. There will be three games played next week and probably four. The freshmen, sophomores and juniors will get out a team. Practices have been held every (lay this week at Melton hall andl at the gymnasium. Show your class col ors and help your respective class to win. Watch the btulletin boardl for schedule of games. The "indoor meet" will p)rob)ably be Thuirsday afternoon, March 10th, or Tuesdlay afternoon. March 15th, in the gymnasium. lmmed'ately after the "in door meet" outdloor spring season will begin. Captain Seideman finished his collegiate basketball career Monday night, and the peer less Bill Rogers also starred in his last game carrying garnet and black colors. * * * HEAD AND SHOULDERS above every center in a constellation of stars, was Stuart of Vanderbilt. A tall rangy fellow, he is an excellent floor man and a deadfly shot. * * * ANOTHER VANDY ACE was Baker, left forward. He and Stuart gave the Gamecocks entirely too much trouble. It was impossible to watch both of them at the same time. * * * ,SlIDEMAN PROBABLY drew more comment than any of the Carolina Gym Dance A dance will be given in the Uni versity gym Saturday night from 9 till 12. Jim Stuart was the main thorn. Rog crs hung on him like a leech during the first period, but he broke loose in the final half, and his perfect long shots proved the Ganiecocks undoing. Monk Clark ran up 13 points by both the long and short route. He and Stuart vied for scoring honors. The Commodore center fell one po'nt short, making five field goals and two fouls. An airtight defense was the policy of both teams in the opening of the second half. It was too important a game to be tr'fled with. Toward the end. Clark and Stuart essayed difficult shots, and ieither was in a missing mood. The Union boy's two long goals causeA the crowd to almost gointo a frenzy. but it was too late, and Vandy won the right to play Georgia in the finals. -U.s.c. Tenement Basketball Rules Are Changed Basketball is the meu every Monday, Wednesday. and fFriday afternoon in the gym and in the new Field House, since the inter-tenement games have got ten under way. As many a seight games can be played in one afternoon with t: use of the two courts. Several changes have- beeii made in the rules governing tenement basketball this year. Oke tenement may p.t ont as miany as three teams although at pres ent no tenemevt has more than one team in the race. There will be no dropping out of teams in this race as there was iii the inter-tenement foothail games. The standing of every team will be reck oied on the percentage basis and th( winner at the end of the season will have probably lost several games.
