BABCOCK SPEAKS Reese and Finkelstein to Finish Because of Insulting Remarks Swords clashed in the Ruphradian hall Tuesday evening and a crowd en- I joyed a social for the newly elected officers of the society were treated to an 18th century duel, when Billy Reese resented an insulting remark made from the floor in a debate and flung a challenge at David Finkelstein. Seconds were appointed and the two men fought to a finish as ordered by John R. Pate, presiding officer of the evening. Reese was the first to score a "t6uche" and the society declared his honor restored. Finkelstein, who last his sword twice in the contest, was borne from the hall in the arms of "Blood" Hildebrand, his second. John Pate welcomed the guests of the society, including girls from Columbia College and co-eds, and introduced Prof. Babcock, the speaker of the eve 11ing. Professor Babcock struck the note of entertainment when he announced the subject of hIs talk as "Romance." He contrasted the suitor of today with Lochinvar of old and read from the poem of that name to give a picture of ancient courtship. Prof. Babcock deplored the degeneration of romance and spirit in present-day youth and ex plained the requisites of romance. H's comparisons and contrasts were highly humorous. Bob Jones, baritone, accompanied by Newell Wimberly and Lindsay Hall sang "Tonight You Belong to Me.' He received several encores. and sang other selections. The query for extemporaneous de bate was, Resolved: "That the boys and girls of today are no worse than their parents." Billy Reese and Miss Ruth Knight of Columbia College were the alfiirnative side, and Tom, Craig and Miss Helen Joyner the negative side. Debaters on both sides availed themselveF of personal experiences and while ne'ther side discussed the weight ier points of the query, each gave am ple proof to bear out its assertions. The debate was cut short during Reese's rebuttal when he and Finkel stein came to words and then swords. P3aderewsK, sole Judge of the deb decided in favor of the affirmative. Tihe social then became informal. Ice cream and cake was served and a str'ng trio, composed of Newell Wimberly, violin; Lindsay' Hall, guitar, and Wil liama Brunson, mandolin, playedl dance and niovelty~selections. Miss IEpps, chaperone of the Colum bia College girls, who was ap)pointedl cr'tic for the evening, spoke favorably of the program and contributed a few remarks on the subject of Prof. Bab cock's talk, saying "that in leaving thc stormy weather she and her 'charges' had p)ronedl that romance still existed.
