LACK OF MONEY HINDERS WORK OF UNIVERSITY Scarcity of Dormitory Space For ces Many Students to Room in Town -u.s.c. CLASSROOMS CONGESTED In Spite of Financial Handicap, University Steadily Extends Scope of Work In 1922, when Dr. Melton came to the University, the enrollment was 746, at the close of last year it was 1$48, and has already reached nearly 1600 this year. From the beginning of his admin'stration to the present time the natural growth has been steadily in creasing. Four years ago the buildings were unfurnished, unsanitary and lacking n every respect. Since then a thorough renovation has taken place; steam heat and water have been supplied, includ ing the library, and the rooms have been furnished. In 1924, two new col leges, Burney and Wardlaw, were an nexed to Woodrow college. The Wo mans Building was also constructed that year. In spite of the new buildings, there is an urgent need for more buildings. Due to the tremendous increase in en rollnent it has been necessary to placc four students in rooms that were ori ginally designed for only two. Also the need of more class rooms is great ly felt ; this will be somewhat relieved by the new classroom building now be ing constructed, but not nearly so muci as is needed. The chapel, Y.M.C.A. build:ng, and the rooms in the garret of LeConte, have been used for this purpose. Dr. Melton gave up his home on Sumter street to the use of the Uni versity. Many students have found boardin-, places at the nearby boarding houses. while a large portion of the women en rolled are from out in town; over a hundred were turned away at the be ginning of the year because of lack o)f accomodations. The summer school has been stead ly increasing due to the agreement of many on the faculty to teach during the summer session. The new athletic field is now finished. being one of the best in the state. This was made possible only by the generous gift of Dr. Melton. The new field house is now being completed furnish 'ng room for a maximum crowd. This was built from the savings fund in the University treasury, no aid coming from outside. With the rapid increase in enrollment the necessity for greater classroom space .s felt greatly. The schedule has been changed so that classes run from eight a. im. to five p. In. F.vein at that many classes have over 30. For the same reason, an increase in the facult. is needled, some classes having between two and three hundred on some days. Money is needled to pay the faeulty so as to maintain a teaching sta Cf equal to that of the other colleges. D)ue to the fait hfullness of a nunmber of t hi faculty, the Graduate School of the University is one of the largest in the United Stat es, having an enro(lhlnent greater than miany of the large colleges of the North. An addition of wvings to thme library will greatly relieve the crowvded situa tion there. At the p)resenit t"me the seating roolm is only 75. There is great need for fire-proof steel bookracks for the library wvhichm is one of the best in the South. as fire wvould cause an uin replaceable loss. Some time ago the V.xtension dlepart muent was adldedl to the University. The Univers'ty Bulletin is published week ly and sent otit to people all over the state by this dlepartment. Also various bulletins with the aim to help for the citizens are pubillished.
