MISS EDWARDS WINS PRIZE IN SONG CONTEST Miss Bartlett and Mikell Sec. ond in Composition Con test Staged J. S. DOWEY ACTS AS JUDGE Rendition of Prize Songs and Presentation of Prizes at Womans Building The second annual song composittor contest closed with first prize being awarded to Louise Edwards. Second place was called a tie between Dorothy D. Barlett and Alice Mikell. The con test was given by the department of music at the University, and seveneen contestants were represented from the class in harmony. J. S. Dowey, -f New York, acted as judge. He was complimentary about the quality of the compositions and had a dificult time in deciding the win ners, finally deciding on a tie betwefen two. He requested a picture of the director of the department of music and a story of the contest be published in the "Music Observer.' Mrs. Fishbourne won first place with her composition, "Night." It is now on sale, the copyright having been re leased from the Aynor publishing Com pany, who publish all songs for the music department of the University. rhe songs were all of the high class art type. Mr. Dowey expressed his interest in the contest and said that this was the only school of its kind that he knew of that was conducting such a contest, and he was sure that it would do lots to war'd raising the creative standard in the Sbuth. Next Friday night a rendition of the prize songs will be given together with "String Quartet," an advanced com posit'on by Mrs. Fishbourne, at the Womans Building at eight o'clock. At the same time the prizes will be award ed to the winners. The second semester the music class will be engaged in the writing of per songs, for which prizes will be award ed at the end of the semester. They are to be written especially for band, and will be played next year. The con test is open to the entire student body. -U.S.C. University Student Wins in Contest To Represent South Carolina Methodist Conference in Oratorical Contest Earl V. Best, university student who won first place in a sub-district Epworth League oratorical contest at Conway, week before last, won the lower state district contest held at Sumter, Tuesay, February 15th. Best will represent the lower South Carolina Methodist conference in a re gional contest to be held at Charlotte wvill compete in the semi-finals at WVof - ford College on March 4th. The winner of the semi-final contest will receive a scholarship to Duke Uni v'ersity andc the right to compete in the national fials to he held at St. Louis, Mo.. on March 18th. Dr. Reed Smith to Speak at "Y" Meeting Member of English Department to Discuss Some of South Carolina's Needs Dr. Reed Smith will he the speaker at the "Y" meeting Sunday night at 7 o'clock. HeI is to give one of the ser ies of talks on South Carolina Needs. with sonme suggestions as to meeting them at the p)resenlt time. Dr. Smith is a member of the English department at the university. He is an authority on ballads in, South Carolina and has made a study of other condli tions1 in the state when he was on the Council of National Defense during the war.
