State-Meets University of Mississippi Next The Gamecocks of the Univer sitY of South Carolina defeated the tean fhonm North Carolina State this afternoon in the initial round of competition in Atlanta by a score of 32 to 26. Ti.tv. wvho h)ave signed uip for the ten nis squadl .have anxiously wvatched the weather reports and inspected the courts, too wvet for ambitious followers of Til den to have opportimities to "do their stuff". Because of conditions there have bceen few matches aid most play crs have held their respective places in the rating. Boyd has continued his phe noi;nenal rise, dlefeating everything that he has met. Reginning next Monday every player must play at least three matches a wveek; weather p,er:nitting, according to infor mation given out by the manager. Any player failing to do so without sufficieni exemie will he dropped from the lisi wtcan re-enter the tournament only by taking last place. Cooperat ion of all students is askec by' the team. This can be given by ob 'erving common sense in the treatmeni1 KS WIN University :Students - in Swimming Class Many Students Go to Pacific Mills for Instruction in Swinuning More than 25 university students are taking adventage of the Red Cross life saving course which is now being held at the Pacific Mills indoor pool. The boys class meets at night while a class for girls is being held every afternoon, several co-eds are in this class. The Iight instruction is under the su pervision of W. B. Searles, University student. J. W. Shields and Caughman Sox. Carolina students are instructors in the afternoon. Captain Yates and his assistant, Mr. Hall, have arrived from Red Cross Na tional Headquarters and will be in charge of the examinations which will start the latter part of this week. Boys who ppss the examination will be awarded the Red Cross life saving cmblem and will be enrolled as regis tered life savers. It is probable that several University students will be ap pointed as examiners in order that they might carry on the same type of work in their home towns. -U.s.c. BOCOCK'S MEN DEFEAT TEAM OF DA VIDSON Clark and Boyd Shatter Davidson Hopes-Anderson and Cal houn Shine BIRDS STAGE COMEBACK Fancy Shots Are High Lights of Game-Rogers Rings Basket in Fast Time The Gamecocks closed the home sea son Monday night with a victory over the Davidson Wildcats. Carolina had a fight on her hands from the begin ming and though showing better all round floor work and much more ac curate shooting that the North Caro liaians. was barely able to eke out a 34 to 20 victory. Carolina leaped to the lead at the opening and always managed to hold her own. The Davidson men were fast and the Garnet and Black guards vere hard-put to stick with them. Clark and Hill Rogers were arsenic to the Davidson hopes. Clark played his best game of tle year and showed beter floor work thani any man on the court. He was on his toes during the whole ganie and rang up ten points. Bill Rogers was taken out at the end of the first half, but when the Wild cats began to crawl up too close to the Carolina lead, Coach Bocock sent him back in. In ten seconds he hurled a Ibeautiful overhand toss through the Far ad theirst goal of the game. Calhun, hota foul for Davidson. "Monkey" Clark gave Carolina another field goal, and it was five minutes later when Fair rang his second goal. The Gamecocks ran up a 12 to 4 lead. Then the Wildcats "went wild." and scored eight points to tie the count. Andlerson and calhoun led the attack. Rogers passed to (lark under the goal, and "Monkey" dlroppedl the sphe roid through the wicker to put the Pal metto five aheadl once more. He soon add(edl another field goal and a little later mlade good on a foul opportunity. Carolina drew a goodl deal ahead to wvardl the last, but the Wilcats rallied to narrow the margin considerably. Long andl fancy shots featured the whole night's p)lay. Players on both teams did stellar work in locating the basket. The shooting was the best seen in C'olumbia this year. --U.S.C. Co-eds Trounce Hi Basketeers at Gym Carolina defeated the High School oni the gymnasium court Tuesday after noon in the third game of the city league b)asketb)all by a score of 21 to 13. The track team is showing tip well and the practice and workouts for the team is get ting harder every day. * * * "MONK" CLARK who has been piay ing a nifty game all the season had his leg injured in the last practice before the team left for the South- t ern Conferctnce tournament in At- I lanta. The injury is not especially I serious and he will make the trip I and will 1robably ply in the first I game with North Carolina State. t * * *t PROSPECTIVE pitchers and catchers are working out daily in the gym and the whole diamocid aggregation will soon be at work. There arc quite a number of hurlers and re ceivers out for Bocock's team which is expected to show up well this year. * * * THERI ARE STILL three weeks of Spring football practice left and the men are working out hard every day. Several men off of this year 's freshman team bid fair to get into the varsity fray when the season opens next September. * * * THE GAMECOCKS are entering the Southern Con ference tournament with an impressive string of victo ries. ALnnual Indoor Meet Planned for March Elephant Walk, Eskimo Roll and Other Amusing Stunts to Be Given 'lans are being made by the Director >f Physical Education for Women for he annual "indoor meet" which is to be ield about the moddle of march. About 50 will participate, and will be "all for un and fun for all." There was a neeting of the squad leaders Thursday o practice the stunts that are going o be given at the "meet."
