S.C. - A W ord A bout the Glee Club A few weeks ago there appearedl, as a forum letter ini The Gamecock, a lea, from the manager of the University Glee Club, that the glee club b)e givent a portion of the money inaid in each year to the U'diversity as sttudent activ - itics fees. '1The qutestion of why the glee ciub does not get a piortion of this money is Iceft to the members of the faculty. Perhaps the reason why the glee cltub (does not receive a part of this fund is becatuse tihe glee club has not, in the p)ast, cooperated with the University at is shotuld have. This is certainly the reasoti any student would object to the club receiving part. All the organizations on the campus that are pa:rtil1 supported by this fuind have the mos(t profound cooperat ion of the :student hb>dy becatuse these organizations seemi to lbe more and are more organizations of the students aivi by the sttudents than is the glee club. Otur literary societies are openf for any member of the studlent body to join andl par' ticipate in. The same is trtie of all our athletics. When a football game is to be played, or a basketball game, or a basebad game, thev are played ont the University grotumds andl 'the students are admitted by their athletic tickets. This, however, is not? trtue of the entertaianents ptut -m b the glee cltub. Nteveni once per year does the University glee club put on ani entertainment in the Unjiversity. chapel at which members of the sttudent body are admintted by their athletic tickets. Not event is one ptut on where admission fees are charged. Or- the other hand, all its performances are put on at one of the female colleges, at the High School, or at nnR' of the theaters iln the city The stulents at Carojina, therefore, know nothing about the glee club here. When the folks at home ask us about our glee club we answer coldly, "I've never heard it." How can students boost the club on the campus or at home when they have never heard it? When they know almost nothing about it ? The University aid its glee clubs must .get together. Who will come across? --U.S.C. Why the Sudden Change If the University Canteen has not become prinariy a money-m1akinig organ we'd like to see one. Lead us to dellartmnent stores, cafes, pool rooms, and shoe shine par lors, all set up for the purpose of making money for one or more persons and we'll lead you back to a place cleser home which, it seems, has !een turned into a money making machine for one. That place is the Canteen. A place that has, up to this time, supported seven or eight boys at the Uiiversity is, in the twinkling of an eye, changed into a reguaar city store with its manager appoint ed by one who is supposed to be superintending at as a place for supply;ng University students and affording work for boys who are compelled to work their way through schoo! i4 order to help defray their college expenses. Our own Canteenk is iio longer a place fior University students, by University students but is now a place by "outsiders" fo, UniversitS students' money. Has the Canteii, as has been run by students in the past, been iosing money ? No, it hasn't, for last year we are toid that the Canteen not only afforded work for seven or eight boys but there was also put into the Univer sity sinkieig fund one hundred dollars, having been cleared by the Canteen. Even if no money were being made by the Calateenl to be put into the sinking fund would it justify takio.-g the store out of the hands of the students at Caro lina? We are prone to believe that it would not. Let us ask ourselves the question, "which will be of more advan tage. work for eight boys at the University or a few extra dollars cast into the University sinking fund ?" One wouid never believe that a member of the faculty were beiAg paid for his services rendered, to the Canteen, as general supprintendent. That would be, it goes without saying, very unethical. Any .member of the faculty who is allpiintcd oat the various committees, it is his duty to help see after the affairs of the University. No member of these cminnittecs is paid for his services. Give us back our old Canteen that helped the boys throiugh school! -U.S.C. South Carolina a Sunday School South Carolin,a now has a state religion and the object of her wmrship is not God. She has left the God of her fathers and is now worshipping the Sabbath instead. Her ,aws say that the Sabbath is holy, therefore keep it so, hlt that do not worship God, for God is onot worshipped im such a manner. Christianity's appeal for centuries has been its lack of pjiysical force, aild not its use of it. God wants no state religion. South Carolina is abol ishinlyg Christianity when she introduces one. It is conceded that man does require one (lay iII seven for rest. An experiment was tried ii France sonic years ago in which ole day in ten was observed and it failed. ITHE FORUM An H-onor There are many sttudents ont the Carolinla campus today who dlon't realize that it is an honor to belong to a literary society. Along with the honor, there is valuable training that one can't get i any classroom or ciu5! to wvhich one belongs. Are you making the best of this opportunity? The new studen.ts coming to the campus watch you and take note of your attitude towardl the literary society. Do you think that the girls who come in contact with yotu are attractedl to the literary society?
