Largest Crowd Ever to Witness
Basketball Game at Carolina
-Seated Comfortably
HAS "JINX" BASKET
No Special Services at Opening
of University's New Ath
letic Building
Approximately 2,000 people witnessed
the basketball game between the Uni
versitics of Florida and South Caro
lina last night in the new Field House.
Tliese figures may not be correct but it
is certain that it was the largest crowd
ever to attend a game at Carolina and
everyone had a good seat with the view I
unobstructed by any posts or supports.
The six large steel girders, stretching
from side to side of the great auditor
imn, eliminate all view-obstructing up
rights and make the building the larg
e'st single span auditorium south of
Washington.
No special opening cerenonies were
observed but Carolnia's varsity team
dedicated the new building in their I
own "winning way" by taking the long
end of a 39 to 33 score from the Flor
idians. Dr. Douglas was present V
and sat on the Carolina side among
a group of students. t
Although the seats and the court in o
the new structure are complete there (
are many more days of work to be I
(lone before all plans for the building
are carried out. Beneath the twelve I
tiers of seats will be shower baths, club
rooms, and roonis for the visiting teams c
when everything now planned is ful- I
filled. It is supposed that special dedi- c
catory or opening exercises will be held
in the new building at that time.
The evenly matched. birch wood floor
makes one of the finest basketball
courts in the country. As the crowd
was filing out, after the last basket had
been rung, a gentleman in the crowd
was heard to express surprise that the
crowd Was allowed to walk across the
floor to the entrances. Probably some
rules will be made in the future that
will forbid any one to go on the floor
without tennis shoes on. The crowd
was prohibited from walknig on tlh
gridiron on Meltoi field last fall and
measures similiar to that may be nee
essary to keep the floor in the good
Condition it is in now.
Spectators at the game last n'ght
were heard to advance the theory that
the basket at the far end of the court
had a "jinx," as neither team seemed
able to ring it as easily as the other
one. Then again, the ball became lod
ged in the brace that supports this
basket and the referee had to call time
out until it could be dislodged.
Several wind(ows on the Sumnter street
s'deI did not have panes in them last
night, and through them a horde of
small boys cotuld be seen, climbing in to
see the game. Later, when the ganme
had started, thle dloorkeepiers allowed
thenm to (come in,. a hundred or more
took advantage of this.
T1he building will be heated by a sepa
rate p)lanit froii thle central heating
uniit. Student biody meetings will be
held there in the ftuture, and all large
mneetinigs in Coltumbia, oif state-widle in
terest, stuch as the State Teachers A'i
sociation, will p)rob)ably be held in the
University Field 1-ouse, which has the
largest seat ig cap)acity of aniy building
in Coltumbia and( possibly, the state.
