Virginia, Wash. & Lee,
and V.M.I.
Carolina meets the strong University
of Virginia basketball team in Char
lottesville tonight. The Cavaliers are
rated highly in the Southern conference,
having several impressive victories to
their credit.
The squad left yesterday afternoon.
They practiced early in the afternoon
and took a late train for Charlottesville.

Clark, Fair, Rogers, Lamar, Wise,
White, Seideman, Farr, Windus and
Chandler.
Coach Bocock will take his charges
to Lynchburg on Saturday night, and
anpther game will be played with the
Old Dominion's state university. Mon
(lay night they meet Washington and
Lee at Lexington. The Virginia Mili

as Practice Gets
Under Way
Spring football is again the order of
the day. The first practice came Mon
day afternoon, and workouts will con
tinue for about six weeks. They are
held primarily for the purpose of keep
ing the regular players in condition,
and also to give every student who de
sires to show his gridiron ability, a
chance to do so.
Bad weather for the earliest part of
the week has kept a few from turning
out. But more will probably be on the
field next week. The usual "condition
ing processes" are being gone through
with. "Rooster" McFadden gives theni
a daily calesthentics drill. Kicking, pass
ing, running with the ball, fall on the
oval, side-stepping, and other forms )f
gridiron routine are practiced.
Scrimmages will be in vogue later
on. Battles between the "scrubs" and
the "varsity" brought good sized crowds
to Davis field last year. To the rabid
fan, they offer a "whiff" of real foot
ball.
Trre followving men were ordered to
rep)ort on Tuesday: Fulmer, Beall,
Joye, Guarino, Price, Lightsey, Topshe,
Thomas, Rodgers, Wolfe, Watson,
Hayes, Graham, Keels, Verner, Adams,
McManus, Covington, Wingfieldl, Wim
berly, Magill, Cooper, Swink, Griffin,
Rhame, Lambert, Hiza, Glowke, Young,
Carl Johnson, Charley Jones, Brown,
anid Reid.
Vogel andl Fair will report after bas
ketball season. Stoddard, McCutchen,
Zobel, Melton, and Pita, will be on the
field after the "rats" lay aside their
br.sketball togs.

Gamecocks Lose to
Furman Basketeers
Large Crowd Sees Gamecock
Lose to Purple Hurricane
in Greenville
Furman piled up a big score in the
secondl game of the trip. "Mike" Byrnes
amnd Funderburke shot too many goals
for the Gamecock basketeers to keep
account of.
A large crowd filled the Furman gym
to~ see the contest, which was considered
to be one of the decisive battles in the
state championship race. The purple
Hurricane is yet undefeated.
Coach Bocock gave Nolan a chance to
"show his home town" something, and
he acquitted himself admirably. Bi,l
Rogers again starred,

Dribblets
THE GAMECOCKS have a pretty
tough schedule ahead of them on
the Virginia trip. It was on a trip
through that section that Carolina
gained considerable notority last
year. A good many game were
won. It's time to repeat.
ALL FOUR TEAMS are in the Sou
thern conference, and the showing
of the Birds in these games w'll de
termine whether or not they will
go to the Atlanta tournament.
THE FLORIDA 'GATORS are here
next week. They have beaten Geor
gia, and she is supposed to have
one of the best teams in the South.
But why Worry? Tennessee de
feated the Floridians, and every
body knows what happened to the
"anti-evolutionist" quintet in Co
liumbia.
IT IS ALMOST a habit for the Uni
versity of North Carolina to be
crowned Southern champions every
year. But the Tarheels are hav
ing a little trouble this time. Mary
land beat them and the Navy team
rallied to overcome a big lead and
walloped them Wednesday night.
TRACK PRACTICE has started. No
meets are on the roster until the
latter part of March.
COMPETITIVE SPRING football is
being talked up. Clemson and
Georgia Tech may play a game or
so. It is poss'ble that something
really important may come of this.
The pigskin game could be played
in the spring as well as in the fall,
even if the weather does become
slightly torrid at times.

season, and he is assured a berth on
the team. Power Rodgers and Drey

place. Gilbert Rowe, captain of last
year's team, is the chief absentee for

Dave Gaston, leading point scorer of
the 1926 season, and state champion

Overcome, it
Rallying strongly in the closing min
utes of play, the Clemson "Tiger Cubs"
won a sparkling victory from a fight
ing Biddie team last night. The score
was 31 to 23.
Cathcart, a subst'tute, was injected
into the Biddie line-up when the sec
ond half was about half over. Clem
son was five points ahead. Immediate
ly the Carolina took the offensive.
Cathcart got the sphere in a scramble
and shot it quickly to Dave Rembert,
who sent it through the wicker. In an
other minute Cathcart snagged the ball
under the goal and cut the Tigers down
to a one po'nt lead. Pita soon put Ca
rolina ahead.
The big, rangy Clemson men had a
fast, accurate passing machine. And
their short passes under the goal was
t'he dominant factor which enabled
them to break the Carolina attack
Asbill, Bailey, and McCarley tallied
counters and the Cubs piled up a safe
margin.
Carolina's forwards were too anxious.
They tr'-d shots from difficult angles,
and a great many flew wild. Hugh
Stoddard, Green, Rembert, and Cath
cart (lid some mighty fine work. Stod
(lard, especially, was in excellent form.
The Biddies were fighting all the time,
and really put up a fine exhibition.
Citadel Tomorrow Night
Jack Simmons w'll bring his "little
soldiers" to the capital city tomorrow
night and the Biddies will form the
opposition. Thle Carolina freshmen ace
going to Greenville for a return match
with Furman on Monday night. Tues
(lay iight they journey over to Clem
