FURMAN TRIUMPHS 33 - 27
Gamecocks Take Early Lead But
Hornets Coape Back
to Win
Furman's ":jinx" held good Tuesday
night. Carolina couldn't keep a ten
point lead, and the Purple Hurricane
emerged winner, 33 to 27. From a
Gamecock standpoint, it was an ex
tremely disappointing contest. For the
first ten minutes, Carolina played rings
around their Baptist opponents, and at
one time the score was 13 to 3, in the
University five's favor.
"Hinie" Fair was in perfect shooting
form. He made almost half of Caro
lina's total score, 12 points being ac
credited to him. The ball was continu
ally "fed" to him, and his side shots
were deadly.
It remained for Funderburke, giant
substitute, to turn the tide of battle
away from the larger school. Furman
started on the uphill grade, and with
the aid of Funderburke's field goals,
were only three points behind when the
whistle blew for the end of the half.
Many Fouls
Carolina virtually lost on account of
giving so many free counters to the
visitors. All of the purple clad men
were adepts at foul-goal shooting and
rarely missed an opportunity to build
up their score in this way.
Gamecock hopes were considerably
dampened when Captain "Si" Seideman
had to leave the floor. Seideman play
ed a fine game up until the time his
knee was injured. Late in the first
half, he was hurt so badly he had to
be taken out. He started again in the
second period, but was later ejected
from the game.
Was Bitter Fight
Furman-Carolina games are always
full of fight. This one was no excep
tion.
The last 5 minutes were fast and fur
ious. With O.Furman leading 25-14, the
Gamecocks attempteda desperate come
back. Billy Lamar and White went in.
Lamar and Fair both, caged beautiful
baskets, and for a time it appeared that
they really would overcome the Hor
net's advantage. But Gibson, Dorman,
and Funderburke shot field goals and
Dorman converted a two foul shots in
to scores.
Funderburke and Dorman both play
ed nice games for Furman. Gibson's
dribbling was a feature.
In the first half the Carolina passing
was perfect. Seideman, Fair and Clark
played consistent ball.

Carolina spilled a little more of the
dope Saturday night, and romped on
a Tennessee's highly rated team 39 to
24. The Volunteers are the conquer
ors of Florida, and were considered to
have a very strong team.
Jim Farr had a big night. The Col
lumbia boy took advantage of his op
portun'ties, and rang up 15 points. A
slightly rearranged lineup took the
floor at the start. Fair and Clark
were the forwards and Holcombe was
out. Clark registered eight points, al
though he played little more than half
. the game.
Carolina took the lead at the begin
ning. Farr shot a foul goal in the
first. minute. Then Holcombe placed
a field goal in the zasket. Moore of
Tennessee rang a long shot. The
Ganiecocks took seven more points be
fore the Volunteers came to life. In
the last half, the visitors threatened
t to rally, but were unsuccessful.
Shultz, Butcher, and McKeen were
Tennessee's best.
The Gamecocks have seven more
- conference gaies to play. To be eli
> gible to compete in the Southern tour
ney, they must win a good percentage
of the remaining games. They have a
perfect score so far.

Percentage Basis to Be Used in
Deciding Winner of Each
of the Classes
TOURNAMENT BEGINS SOON
The Winners in Each Class Will
Be Awarded in Suitable
Manner
Three teams from every tenement
playing in classes A, B and C are the
plans for the intra-mural basketball
season is announced by J. 0. Van Me
ter, director of physical education.
Every tenement will be required to
put forth a class A team first and
then they nfat put out two other teams
which will fall in classes B and C.
There will be no town teams but a
tenement team may have three town
sttidents on it. This applies to all
three classes. There must be seven
men on every squad.
There will be no eliiination series
as was experienced in the recent intra
mural football games. All teams will
play straight through and the standing
of each team will be worked on a per
centage basis. In other words, a loss -
,will not throw a team out of the race
as it did in football.
There will be a General Committee
coml)osed of one man fron each team
in charge of the schedule and games.
An Executive Commnittee will be chos
en from the niembers of the General
Committee and this will be in direct
charge of the games. All disputes as
to the eligibility of players and other
matters of this sort will be brought
before this committee.
No man who has ever played varsity
basketball is eligible. No man who is

is eligible. Aiy man making freshman
team last year andl not going out for
vars*tY this year is eligible.
A group of men will be picked as
olicials and all games will have to be
playedl undle rthe supervision of one of
these men. One of them will referee
every gamie.
If a team fails to b)e on the floor at
the time set for the game, he game
will be forfeited. This rule will be
rigidly enforced as postponement of the
games ill mean a delay in the entire
schledule.
A list of players in each class from
every tenement must be turned in to
Mr. Van Meter immediately after ex
aminations. No recognition will be
taken of any team umntil this is done.
The gym floor may be used for prac
tice dutring exams at the regular class
hours. All tenements who have turn
ed in their footballs may secure a bas
ketball one to each tenemnent, from the
head of the physical dlepartment. Un

The first of the games w'ill start on
