CAROLINA MEN WOULD GO TO OXFORD UNIY Rhodes Scholarship Selectia Committee Meets 10 O'clock .lore Tomorrow FIFTEEN CANDIDATES C. L. Cuttino and J. L. Mills Ar Applicants from University of South Carolina When the Rhodes scholarship selec tion committee meets here to-morrol morning to select the successful cand: date to go to Oxford University frot South Carolina there will be two mem bers of the University of South Carc lina among the fifteen candidate These are: Charles L. Cuttino, of Sum ter, and John Laurens Mills, of Cam den. Both are in the University lav school and have already received A. H degrees. The selection committee is compose of Dr. Davidson M. Douglas, president elect of the University of South Carc lina; J. Robertson Paul, of Charleston J. Lyles Glenn, Jr., of Chester; J. 1: Norwood, of the University of Sout Carolina; and Irvine F. Belser, secre tary, of Co!umbia. There are two South Carolinians a Oxford at present. Thorne Sparkman who received his A. B. here, in 192; and his M. A. in 1924, and r"on th award that year. He will graduate nex fall. Mr. Sparkman is expected hon in a few days for the Christmas holi (lays. The other is Robert Davidson of Chester, and a graduate of Davidso college, who won the award last yeai The Rhodes scholarship is awarde( to the candidate who is selected by th committee as being the best all-rounc student from the standpoint of person ality, character, leadership, literary an scholastic ability and physical vigor The applicant must be a college or uni versity graduate, and must be recom mended by the president of the insti tution from which he was graduated. The Rhodes scholarship awarde< carries an annual stipulation of 40 pounds, or about $2,000, paid in quar terly installments, which sum enable a student to live comfortably. Sinc the scholarship is tenable for thre years, there is one year out of ever three in which no election will be hel< About 200 letters have been maile out over the state and country concern ing the qualifications of the candidate and scores are being answered daily. Today at ten fift o'clock, Chief Justice Eugene B. Gar] of the South Carolina suprtme cour (lied at a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. For thirty years Judge Gary rad s; on the State supreme bench and was several times connected with some c e of South Carolina's more importal political affairs. He became lieutenai governor in 1890. At the time of hi election to this office he was a success ful yowig lawyer in Abbeville, S. C. H v was, three years later elected to the su preme bench as an associate justice. Eugene Blackburn Gary was born Cokesbury, S. C., in 1854. In his earl years he went to Judge Benet's classic; school, after which he came to the Uni versity of South Carolina. Here i1 was graduated in 1872. His knowledg of law came from his study of that sul ject for several years in the Edgefiel office of his uncle, General Mart V Gary. In 1915, the University of Soul Carolina conferred upon him the d< grec of LLI,. D. Jludge Gary had been in failing healt for several years but was not confine permanently to bed until November 2 At that time he was taken to the ho! pital in Atlanta. At the time of his gc t ing to the hospital he was suffering frot - a nervous breakdown.
