PING PONG; IS ON FLINN HALL PROGRAM NOW Jn Ready, Four Year Veteran, )ecisively Beaten by Sopho - a more Karesh ' "BILL" BOYD WINS den, Two Year Champion, Will Stake His Crown in Post .g Season Game A'he first round of the Ping Pong tournament held at Flinn Hall was marked by a big upset. Sam Ready, veteran of four years, was decisively defeated by sophomore Joseph Karesh, a comparatively unknown player, in straight sets (6-0, 6-3). All other vet erans came through successfully. In a one-sided match, W. D. Simp son overwhelmed Parler in straight love sets (6-0, 6-0). Parler was un able to make a s'ngle point in the first set and only one game went to deuce in the second set. Kimble won, by default, from Han kins. Bill Boyd defeated Chandler in a match beset with thrills, to the tune of 8-6, 6-4. Chandler won the first 4 games in the second set, but Boyd came back and won the next 6, thereby winning the set and the match. Nolan defeated Stowe in straight sets (9-7, 6-2). McGregor defeated Folk in straight sets ((11-9, 6-4). After Folk had led 5-1 in the first set, McGregor showed a reversal of form and finally won the set. H. M. Glen, last year's champion, is prepared to play the winner of this year's tournament for the double championship. Glen, champion for the past two years, has been declared to be ineligible to compete for the coveted award this year, but will meet the win ner of this tournament in a post-sea son game in an attempt to gain his third silver ping-pong ball. The second round is now in progress. - U.S.C. - Dr. Hen. D. Phillips to Address 'Y' Boys Trinity Church Rector Named As Greatest Southern Foot ball Player Dr. Henry I). Phippils, rector of Trinity church, will close the series of Bible talks for the fall term Sunday night at 7 o'clock, when*he speaks in the chapel on the subject of "Prayer." For a number of years Dr. Phillips has been teach'ng a Bible class for University students that meets on Wed mesday iiights. A large number of th. University men, not all of whom are I?piscopalians have attended these talks and to them Dr. Ph'llips' style is well known. He has also spoken at chapel a number of times and at Y meetings. He always carries a message that in terests the students. Dr. Phillips was for a time pres' (lent of the Southern Inter-collegiate Athletic Association before the mem biers of the Southern Conference with drew andl formed thcir own association. TORREY WILL HOLD SERIES OF MEETINGS Noted Evangelist Will Start Lec tures in Chapel on December 15 UNDER AUSPICES OF "Y" Students Have Opportunity to Hear Former Pastor of Moody Church Speak Robert A. Torrey, D. D., starts a ser:es of meetings at the University chapel on Wednesday morning, De cember fifteenth, at the chapel period. and will continue through Sunday the nineteenth, making his last talk at the regular 7 o'clcck mcc:ing of th Y.M. C.A. Dr. Torrey is now at Marion, Va.. holding a two weeks meeting. Reports from Marion say that he is preaching to capacity crowds there. People from towns, near Marion are also crowding to the meet'ngs. According to a letter received at the Y office, in one of his meetings, people drove in from as far as 9X) miles to hear him. Everywhere he has been heard in the South in the last two years, he has made a great im. pression. Dr. Torrey is a Bible scholar and a Ipreacher that has occupied a nunmer of places of inportance in the country. He suceceedled D)wight L. Kii 1523 Mai TORREY In 1901, Dr. Torrey made a tr'p around the world, preaching and teach ing in many of the great cities of the world. In Australia, he held a serie' of meetings at Melbourne in the great town hall. seating 3,500 people. This hall was practically filled at every neting during the month that the ser ies ran. There were 8,642 people re ceived into the church during this ser es. He came back through England by request, and held meetings in Eng land, Ireland and Scotland. In Liver pool the services were held in a build ing that seated twelve thousand people. It is reported that on the last night of the series, the building was filled to capacity. I)r. Torrey preached to this great throng, and asked them to leave so that those on the outside could take their place. At the second service the building was filled to capac'ty, making 30.0() people at the services. It is said that his greatness lies not only in his scholarship, but also in his personality. Hle seems to be able :o draw men to hin wherever he goes. Not only is this true on the platform but also in the personal talks that he always welcomes. Dr. 'T'orrey will also speak at the men's meeting at the im per'al theater, Sunday afternoon at 3 :30.
