BASKETEERS TO
BEGIN WORK ON
NEXT MONDAY
Coach 'Bocock in St. Petersburg
for Meeting of Southern
Conference Coaches
SEIDEMAN IS CAPTAIN
Gamecocks Have Excellent Pros
pect for a Good Five
This Year
'Regu;ar basketball practice will begin
on .\onday, December 6th,"Coach Bo
cock announces. He is in St. Peters
burg, Fla., this week for a meeting of
the Southern Conference coaches and
officials!
Most of the players have been work
ing out since the football season closed.
It won't be long now until the 'king of
winter sports' holds sway again. The
basket game has come to the fore in the
last few years, aild it is rarely that the
gymnasium is not 'Racked to its capacity
for a varsity contest. The thrill of the
hug shot in the last minute of play is
almost as popular as the long run for a
touchdown.
'Si' Seideman is captain of the varsity
this season, but it is not known whether
lie will be in shape to play or not, as
the injured knee he received in the F r
skine game is still troubling him. 'Si'
played running guard last year, and his
prowess at defending a goal has been
sung many times before. If lie is able
to participate this time he will in all
probability be shifted to play stationary
guard.
Bill Rogers is Carolina's best all-round
bet on the basketball boor. He is one of
the best in the state. Rogers is the cog
about which the rest of the five work.
Last year lie played forward, but if Bo..
cock can develkll two forwards from the
four men who are outstanding candi
dates. Rog.: will play a rinming guard.
The forwards are to be picked from the
following men: Fair, Clark, Wise and
Nolan. The first three mentioned were
on the varsity squad last season. Nolan
is the former Parker High School star,
who made such a good record in Fresh
man circles last year.
Jim Farr did mighty nice work in the
Furman game, and he will have a good
chance to play guard in some games at
least. Chandler, captain of the 1926
Biddie quintet offers a threat for a place
on the team. Keels and Vogel are also
candidates.
The Gamecocks are slated to put as
good a team on the boor this season as
they did last year. The victory over
Ga. Tech in Atlanta was a big boost to
the team's reputation. The only games
scheduled so far are those on the Vir
ginia trip which is to take place early in
February. A complete schedule is to be
prirted after the Southern Con ference
meet'ng. as Mr. Driver expects to get a
nelwr of games then.

Cuttino Is Winner in
Fencing Club Match
Several Matches Necessary to
Decide Best Man in Recent
Tournament
C. L. Cuttino was the wvinner of the
recent tournament conducted bv the
Carolina Fencing Club. which came to
an end Friday night. After the tourna
mient had proceedled through several
matches, those remaiing in the run
ning Friday morning were: D. H.
Eargle, C. L. Cuttino, D)avid Finkle
stien, andl Douglas Jeter.
Friday morning the Cuttino-Eargle.
fight ended five to one, in favor of
Cuttino. That afternoon Cut tino
dcitated Jeter and won the finals from
Finklestien Friday night, five to two.
This gave Cuttino the club champion
ship. The winner had been extendled
to the utmost to win over Griffin earl.
ier in the tournament. Though the
winner has the option of fighting the
last years' wvinner, W. R. Reese, for the
championship, it is understood that he
will not do0 so. There will probably
be an exibition match later in the year.
Trhe fenc'ng class at the gynm is now
fully equipt with the very best equin
nment, and it is anxious that those in the
school interested in the sport, try out
for the team. The University champ
ionship, which will decide the personel
of the varsity, will be held immed'ately
