DEBATERS TRY 1 TO WIN RODDEY MEDAL MONDA Y Preliminaries Will Be Held by Men's Societies One Week Before Finals ORATORS COMPETE IN JAN. a Forensic Activities Begin in Ear nest Following Christmas Holidays The preliminaries for the Roddey r Medal Debate will be held the coming Monday night, in the Chariosophic and t Euphradian halls, an hour to be ar ranged by the respective societies. Each society will select one affirmative and one negative debater to represent S them in the finals, to be held at the University chapel Monday night, De cember 13, at 8 :00 p. in. The query is: "Resolved: That a Constitutional Con- L vention in South Carolina should be la held at this time." The first week after the Christmas holidays, will see forensic activities be gin in earnest. On January 10, the or ators of the University will compete for the Keith medal. Each contestant must write and deliver an original ora tion. Preliminaries to eliminate all but 6 men will be held about January 5. On January 15, the. University will select an affirmative and a negative tl team to oppose the University of Flor- b ida and Tennessee, in a trianglar af fair on February 12. The question to be c argued is: Resolved: That a Five Day s Week would advance the Economic u and Social Interests of the Country. c On March 1, Carolina will select two men to oppose Bucknell University at l Columbia, on March 20. Carolina is to 0 defend the negative of the query: "Re- 1 solved: That the 18th Amendment be g Abolished." a Plans for the trip north, is being t< steadily pushed forward. Details of the contest will be explained further a in a coming issue of the Gamecock. t< The query is on the Light Wine and c Beer question. n The little triangle with Citadel and a P. C. will be held around the middle of March, on a subject as not yet selected. A triangle debate with Georgia an I some other institution is also being ar ranged. Moore, of the biology department, occupies the east ern half of the building. This building is widely known as the former residence of several very fam ous men in South Carol'na history. R. V. D. Magoffin Will Speak Friday %rchaeologist From New York University to Lecture in Chapel Dr. Ralph Van Deman Magoffin, tofessor and head of the department f classics of New York University, 'll speak in chapel Friday morning, )ecember 17, on the subject of "The truscans." Dr. Magoffin is an ar haeologist, and an authority on ancient taly. The Etruscans are a little known ice of early Roman history, and Dr. iagoffin has made a special study of tem. Dr. Magoffin was stationed at Camp ackson, S. C., for a period during the r orld war. He is also a veteran of the panish-American war. Conrad witj CaireV "TIN E FRIDAY and S ENGLISH CLASS WRITES NOVEL PIRA TE TIMES Prof. Babcock Introduces New Idea in English 127-Chap ters by Committees BLACKBEARD FIGURES story Based on Life and Times of Famous Adventurer May Publish An entirely new idea, as far as can e ascertained, is being carried out by inglish 127, a class in literary and dra matic criticism under Professor Hav ah Babcock. The class is writing a cmi- h'storical novel, based partly on he life of Blackbeard, the notorious irate, and having its setting off the oast of North Carolina, in the Ocrek' oind region. It is planned to pub sh the novel. The idea is unique in that the chap ers are being written s'multaneously y committees consisting of twO stu cnts each. The skeleton of the plot as created by Harry Shaw, Jr., and wes its radifications to suggestions by arious members of the class. Profes or Babcock sketched the outline and ssigned the chapters. Much care has been taken with the tmosphere and background of the ovel. Available sources of information ave been exhausted that the authors may catch the spirit of the period and evive in their novel the barbaric, ruth .ss and swashbuckling pirates of old. 'rofessor Babcock, having read widely i the subject of piracy as a hobby or several years. has related many iteresting anecdotes to the class, an.1 ome of these are being used to give lie ,tory color, interest and humor. Personal prejud'ces and tastes, ruled trgely in determining the character tics and appearance of the principals, lie girls of the class waging a hot bat le over the attributes of the hero.
