Morse's 'Chariot' Is Destroyed by Fire Students Forsake Thanksgiving Dinner to View Garage Fire on "Faculty Row" Thanksgiving dinners were rudely interrupted yesterday by fire sirens, yellitig-students and noise in general. The excitement was greater than the craving for turkey, and everyone rush ed out to see what was causing the disturbance. The air was filled with smoke and the streets with rushing feet. Fiery tongues of flames were lash'ng sky ward, and it appeared that the half of of the campus was going in flames. Question of "Where? Where?" wer2 answered with pointing fingers as the crowd poured in the direction of "fac ulty row." After much conjecture and alarm, it was found that the conflagration was only the burning of an automobile shed behind Dr. Morse's residence. The gallant and brave Columbia fire depart ment soon had the flames under con trol and the yelling students scared, all thought of spread.ng out of that poor fire. But the sad story became sadder as an old remnant of a car was pulled burning from the sh-:d. It was what was left of Dr. Morse's gas chariot. The campus psychologist was absent in Louisiana and will find to his sorrow that upon his return his bus will no longer save his weary feet from trod d ng the sidewalks of Columbia. The excitement over the crowd dis persed, but only after amb'tious stu dents had turned the garden hose on Dr. Baker's residence. All returned to the assaults upon turkey and cranber ry. - U.S.C. - Carolinian to Have Edition for Faculty In order that the faculty member; have a chance to display their literary talent, Miss Elizabeth Hardy, editor in-chief of "The Carolinian" announce, that the Christmas edition of the mag azine will be a special faculty number. Contributions will be limited to facul ty members only. TO BE PRESENTED AT UNIVERSITY Algernon Sydney cullivan Medal lion Is Presented to Faculty for Acceptance THREE ARE ELIGIBLE Three Institutions Are Already Recipients of Highly Val- u ued Medal A new award, known as the Alger non Sydney Sullivan Medallion, has been offered to the University of South Carolina this year, and while it has not been formally accepted, it merely awaits a meet'ng of the faculty, when it will probably be added to the list of. honors conferred next June. The medallion was established by the New York Southern society in memory of its first president, Algernon Sydney Sullivan, who, altho only a Southerner by descent, tried to streng then the bond between Southerners in New York, keeping alive the spirit of love and loyalty for their old homes. The statement accompanying th. award gives as the conditions that the medal be given to three persons a year. One of these must be a woman of the graduating class; one, a man of that class, and one a person who is not a student of the college and who may or miay not be a graduate of the institu ton. The award is to be made to a person who by his life, conduct, and character shall be considered to deserve it. The w:.nner shall be chosen by the faculty, considering only the possession of such characteristics of heart, mind and con duct as to evince a spirit of love and helpfulness to other men and women. If, 'n the opinion of the faculty, no one has displayed such qualities so con spicuously as to merit the award, no award is to be made. The judgment is to be absolute, and not in comparison to other students. The award is offered to the Univer .ity of South Carolina in accordance wifh a plan of a special committee ap pointed last spring. At present the award s in operation in the following colleges : Georgia Peabody College for i< ac hers, Nashville; Antioch College, Yel.ow Springs, Ohio, and the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. Chapter. to k Be Organized Here First University Chapter in the United States Being Spon sored by Mrs. Beard Tonight a meeting will be held in Mel ton Hal for the purpose of organizing 4 University U.D.C. chapter. This meet ing is being sponsored by Mrs. Beard, vice-pres dent of the South Carolina di visioo of the U.D.G. and representatives of the three Columbia chapters will be present. Mrs. Beard states that this will be the first university chapter in America. There are a few chapters in schools of the South but none in universities. Al, co eds and alumnae of the Univer sersity of South Carolina who meet the regular U.D.C. requirements of mem bership are eligible. It is expected that many will join as some of the women student have agitated this move for sonie time. Among the purposes which the chapter wili work. for are acquaint ing' the girls with the history of the country, promoting social life and edu cation. Mrs. Beard will attend the state con vention in Camden next Wednesday and there will report the organization of the new chapter and to ask for oire U.D.C. scho,arships to the University. The medallion is rectangular in shape, standing on the short side. It has a picture of a man holding a torch from which a youth is I ghting his torch. In his right hand the youth holds a book with two clasps upon it; in his left he holds the torch. Both figures are drap ed and wear sandals. The man has a mustache. The inscription in a square beneath the figure reads: "The Algernon Syd ney Sullivan Medallion, established by the New York Southern Society,1926.
