Enthusiastic Girls . Plan Reorganization Co-Ed Athletic Association to be Made One of the Livest Groups on Campus At the meeting of the Co-ed Ath tetic Association last n'ght there was a large and enthusiastic crowd of girls intent on making the Co-Ed Athletic Association mean something to them selves and the the University. Plans for reorganization and tunct ioning power were discussed at length. Miss Smith, Director of Physical Edu cation for women, outlined her ideas about what the association should be, and then discussed the ideal toward which she is working for every girl in the department of physical education. The president of the association was giyen the power to appoint a commit tee to draw up a point system to be adopted and used in the awarding of honors to the girls taking part in athletic activities. The idea of the department of phy sical education, as Miss Smith outlined, is that every girl in the University be in some branch of physical work and to make it "fun for all and all for fun" as the slogan adopted at this meeting; all of which is much better than the old way of going when com pelled and escaping when possible. It is the aim to have the inter-class tournaments this year in hockey, bask etball. tennis, dancing and swimming, rifelry and fencing, if it is possible to add the equipment. Horseback riding is also another possibility Miss Smith is working on now. -BEAT FURMAN - "Birth Control" Is Argued by Society Euphradians Debate "Dissemina tion of Birth Control Infor mation Be Stopped" "Resolved that the dessemination of Birth Control information be stopped," Aq ;qBiu Aiepsan j lsul Baanb aiL> sun the Euphradian literary society. Messrs. Hildebrand and Savitz upheld the af firmative while Messrs. Karesh and Mopper debated the negative side of the question. The affirmative won the dec'sion of the judges and also the decision of the house. The semi-annual reception of the society will be held at the next meet ing. Many fair damsels are expected and the reception is looked forward to with much interest. They have al ways been a success and this one is not expected to be an exception to the rule. Messrs. W. F. Taylor and Nathan Webber amused the society very much with ther witty remarks. Leslie Ed wards was the weekly orator, his sub ject being "Dr. Douglas as President of the University." His remarks were enjoyed by the society. Mr. Sydney Green was initiated into the society. -- U.s.c. - Announce Engagement of Former Univ. Co-ed Miss Helen Laval DuPre Will Be Married to Mr. John F. Satterlee An engagement of much itaterest es pecially among the students of Carolina is that of Miss Hleni l.aval DuPre to John Franklin Satterlee. Miss DuPre is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Young DuPre of PaAmetto plantation, Charleston county. 1 Helen possessed a winning p)ersonality and gained a number of friends when she attended the University. She is among one of the~ youngest co-eds that has ever graduated from Carolina. -She has been teaching this year i McClel lanvil.e where her parents residle, so the wedding will probab.y not take p)lace until sometime after the closing of school in June. Mr. Satterlee is the eldest son of the late Capt. Charles Booth Satterlee, U. S.A., anid Mrs. May Capers Satter-k~e. He i.s the grandson of the late Bishop Ellison Capers anl also a kinsman of the late Bishop Satterlee of Washing ton, D. C. Mr. Satterlee's father died while in foreign service in Honolu.u, and for many years he, with h's mother. and other members of the family, made their home in Atla,,a. LARGE NUMBER FROM FACULTY IN "WHO'S WHO" Red Book Reveals Many Unus ual Things About Our Teachers NINE MEMBERS LISTED List of Works by Wauchope Fills Alnost Half Column Only "Who's Who" 'n "Who's Who" ;nd Carolina has its share of faculty nembers in the little red book of dis :inguished people. Nine men on the University teaching and research firce iave contributed enough to the world's )rogress to be listed along with others rvho have made a mark for themselves. Jpon reading the short biographies of ur faculty members n this compila :ion, some very important things are -evealed and things that would never )e known otherwise. We find that Dr. L. T. Baker, act ng president of the University, is ,vritten up as being one of the fore nost educators of the South, and that he is also editor of "South Carolina Education." He is also a member of the Cosmos club, of Columb'a, and of he Chi Phi fraternity. Dr. Patterson Wardlaw was, at one time, superintendent of the public schools of Darlington county. He is now chairman of the Board of - Edu cation of Richland county, on Advis Dry Council of the Simplified Spelling Board, and is a member of the Cosmos club. Dr. Wardlaw is also noted as be ing one of South Carolina's leading contributors to educational topics. George Armstrong Wauchope, A. B., A. M., Ph. D., Litt. D., receives more space in "Who's Who" than does any Dther member of the faculty. A mere list of the bulletins and books written by Dr. Wauchope, fills almost a half column. We learn also that no other facutly member has as many degrees, with the exception of Dr. Currell,.as the head of the English department at Carolina does. Dr. Wauchope, soon after rece'ving his degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Washington and Lee, studied German in Berlin and travele-l in England. Dr. Wauchope is a memn ber of the Drama League of America, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Modern Lan guage Association of America. Dr. A. C. Moore, originally of Spartanburg county, was, soon after his graduat'on from the University, .uperintendent of the city schools of Spartanburg, Camden, and Birmingham (Ala.), respectively. Dr. Moore was for ne year acting president of the Uni versity. He is now a member of the A.A.A.S., and of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. William Spenser Currell, A. B., B. P., A. M., Ph. D., LL. D., was awarded one legrec, that of LL. D., by three differ :nt institutions of learning, the Uni ersity of Alabama, Davidson College, indl the University of Florida. "CROW" MIHOHm Prof. Snowden Tells t and Cast Acts Story While Prof. Yates Snowden speeled forth the history of South Carolina, a number of people were delightfu,ly and .beneficially entertained Wednesday af ternodn and naght when the words of Professor Snowden were put into panto mine. Mr. Reed and his associates are much better pleased with the performance in the Columbia Theatre than they were with the outdoor presentation. *It is too big a thing" is Mr. Reed's statement regarding the pageant. "But it has been a great experiment. I have iearned a lot from it." Though the pageant was not attended as was expected, great praise was given it by nun,bers of those who did attend. "It is- simply wonderful," says one spec tator. "I would like to go up and down the street tel,ing people how wonderful it is." Mr. Reed is to select his next produc tion shortly. -BEAT FURMAN "Arms and the Man" Presented at Coker Carolina's student-actors are begin. ning towin fame, not only in Columbia, but are proving themselves versatile and capable performers before other 'college audiences of the state. Last Monday night Mr. Reed carried the "Arms and the Man" troupe to Hartsville for a performance at Coker College. . The Coker girls were most enthus- - iastic in their exclamat'ons about our "Bill" Holland, Charlie Cuttino and Coleman Karesh, but the biggest ripple of all was created around the person of Harry Davis, assistant to Director Reed, who also had a role in the play. Mr. Reed and Mr. Davis returned to Columbia Monday night, but the remainder of the party was entertained in homes of Hartsville people, and re turned to Columbia the next day. For several years Mr. Reed has been carrying at least one or two plays to Hartsville people and has always had an enthusiastic and appreciative au- - lience of college girls and town people. languages at four different institutions. He has been dean of the graduate school s'nce 1922, at which time he re sign:d the presidency of the Univer sity of South Carolina. Dr. Currell has also been lecturer on English language and literature at Chatauqua assemblies and others. Other faculty members, whose namej appear in "Who's Who," are Drs. Morse, Taber, Snowden, and Ball. Each of these is noted for the work, origi nal and compilatory, that he has (lone in this field. Dr. Taber s recognized as being one of the leading seismolo gists of America and has dote much in his field. Dr. Taber is recognized the school of Journalism, "is widely knowvn as a political editorial writer.'' Dr. Ball is also a member of the Cos mos club andl of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Boyd B.
